Neat, but at the current stage of development, it would take a battleship to carry all the gear required to fire the projectile.

Cool....a linear induction motor. The concept was discussed in one of my EE classes many years ago. I remember the possible uses brought up included projectile launches.

Have to agree with Don, until they come up with a miniature nuclear reactor to power the thing, they will have to have something the size of two aircraft carriers just to power one triple mount turret. But it is something awesome to consider.

What you gotta realize is the military is 15 years ahead of what they release to the public

Don't worry about the video unavailability, it's just a matter of time until we find out why US military video isn't available to one of it's most steadfast allies.
Thanks WikiLeaks!

Some Thoughts...,

It's useful to think about design trends in new aircraft carriers where catapults are guess what?..., Linear Induction motors. An experimental aircraft elevator that uses?... Linear Induction motors again. The U.S. Navy seems to be in an inductive state of mind.

Expanding the envelope consider absolute zero magnetic induction capable of achieving an order of magnitude effect on both efficiency and size.

It's helpful to remember that Mach 34 at sea level is required to establish Earth orbit....,

+Gil

P.S. I don't think small nuclear reactors is a limitation. Electronics that can survive launch is more probably the tougher nut...,

Didn't take long for the engineers to put men on the moon. Won't be long, railguns will be stander weaponry on board every Navy ships.

Actually, I am a little disappointed tho, that they still shooting projectile and not laser.
