These tank models, and especially the planes, were obviously meant to help train as many people as possible in recognising enemy craft. This is the first time I have seen any tanks - they would obviously have been aimed at tank crews and other military personel, as the pictures clearly show.
As a great many more people would obviously need to be able to distinguish between enemy and friendly aircraft, the plane models were distributed in much larger numbers. They would have been highly useful for all observers on the ground as well as in the air. The tank models seem simpler than the planes. The planes are easily the quality of later Jade/Wilhelmshaven models - surprisingly good, in fact, given that it was all hand-drawn! |

Good evening, Diderick!
The first three pictures of # 1 post show Luftwaffe personnel; that means that the officer (maybe Capt. Rudel) instructed the aircrews how to hit the tanks at their most vulnerable points. These models show the KV I, KV II and T-34 tanks. - By the way: Some of the aircraft models were designed by a young Luftwaffe officer, Karl Wittrich, who continued with designing aircraft paper models after the war in Austria under his own brand, GELI, until old age forced him to retire. But his works live on - now under the régie of three enthusiasts. See here: http://www.geli-modellbau.org Kind regards - Papercaptain Last edited by Papercaptain; 02-22-2013 at 01:51 PM. Does anyone have any information on the use of paper models for training or for entertainment of military personnel by other countries during World War II?
I know that in the United States cardboard silhouette aircraft were used for aircraft i.s. purposes, along with the early war wooden models and the later cast models, but were there any other paper model applications by the Allies, the Italians, or the Japanese? Don |

The US Army used thousands of balsa airplanes during WWII for target practice. I know it's not paper but they were really neat models. Check in out here:

I must have gone through a dozen of those, or an aftermarket civilian market version of those when I was a kid. They were great fun, but I never used them for target practice.
