What a waste....being that theres no aerodynamic issues in space, something the show dismissed with banking turns, etc. we would be better off building a death star. yep....easier to enclose and utilize all the given space with contra rotating wheels. Or just a plain cylinder like the unknown species freindly to the whales in the voyage home episode!...again with contra rotating wheels to dampen harmoncs and imbalance! LOL!!!! People kill me!!!

a rolling bar of heavy mass at the bottom of the ship could provide gravity.

there is no detectable difference between constant acceleration and gravity. if you accelerate through a turn (and changing from a straight line trajectory to a curve is acceleration in that plane; from zero to something,) you will be spilling your cup of coffee just like if it was on the dashboard of the car.
