Excellent Print of the New Oublic Bathhouse Tatebanko
High resolution reproductions of a well preserved set of prints of the New Bathhouse Tatebanko.
永田コレクション | 島根県立美術館の浮世絵コレクション 葛飾北斎 かつしかほくさい しん板くミあけとうろふ ゆやしんミセのづ しんぱんくみあげとうろう ゆやしんみせのず 文化中期(1807~12)頃、大判錦絵、五枚組、[永田コレクション] Katsushika Hokusai Newly published cut-out pictures : New public bathhouse [Nagata Seiji collection "It is a gumigami-e that becomes a "yuya" (a related image) of a public bathhouse when you put cardboard on the back and cut it out and assemble it. Gumijo-e is a kind of toy painting, and in Kamigata it is also called tachibanko. There are various types of kabuki, such as kabuki stage, houses, hinadan, battlescapes, etc., and since each part is drawn while calculating after completion, the painter required intelligent precision. Hokusai is a master of this kumite, and about ten kinds are known. Because it is a practical toy, the surviving examples of the finished product are extremely rare. The linked page says that the the process used for printing the sheets is "nishiki-e" (wood-block printing). For every color a seperate printing block has to be carved.
The german wikipedia page about nishiki-e (Japanischer Farbholzschnitt) states that one attribute of this art form is the absence of perspective. Well, turning a subject into a series of paper modeling sheets is definitely removing any perspective, i guess. Very interessting, thanks for sharing! |

Sakamoto Sanda has just published the next model on his site.
This time it's T203 "Tomica-size small house" This is something new on his webpage. The most numerous up to now were "N-series" models (1/150 to 1/160) but the last two seemed to begin a new "T-series", described by the author as suited to the "Tomica-sized" car models, which are in turn mostly designed in 1/62 to 1/64 scale. However the number of the details of "T-series" models look similar to the previous Sakamoto Sanda-san output, which made them rather simple models and easily can be scaled down to N-scale (roughly 2,5 x) if needed.

I faithfully copied the machine translation of the web site. This might or might not help a bit: I assume that a Kodo was either the artist or the printer. kameyuki : Kameyuki Name Meaning, 3 Kanji variations - NAZUKE PON Nishiki-e (錦絵, "brocade picture") is a type of Japanese multi-coloured woodblock printing; the technique is used primarily in ukiyo-e. (Ukiyo-e ((浮世絵) ) is a Japanese term for woodblock prints and paintings that depict the culture and life of the Edo period (16151868). The term translates to "pictures of the floating world") Oban is a traditional paper size. The most common print size was the oban (大判) format (which used half of a large o-bosho sheet), is approximately 39.4 x 26.5 cm. (about 15.5 x 10.5 inches) (On our home printers, we are probably printing out tatebanko on incorrectly sized paper.) Everything you wanted to know about Japanese paper sizing: Guide to Standard Woodblock Print Sizes | Japanese Art | Ukiyo-e "Tatebanko to yoba reru omocha e no hitotsu de kono zu o kitte hatte kumitateru to kani to kame ga kansei shimasu" The explanatory text is slightly puzzling, perhaps the Firefox translator, which is still in beta phase, still has a few kinks that need to be worked out. |

Multi page Chusingura tatebanko
C4.08.01 「大新板忠臣蔵十二段切組無双大燈籠」 - 赤穂市「忠臣蔵」浮世絵デジタル展示室 "This material was written by Sadanobu Hasegawa (1809-1879), the first head of Osaka's leading ukiyo-e and who also worked on many Kirigumi Toro-e paintings, and is a unique large-scale one of the fourteen large-format films. The contents of this are precisely the style of assembling 'Chushingura Dai Panorama' by skillfully arranging the famous scenes of each dan from the head of the "Kanadehon Chushingura" to the indictment of the attack. 01 "Juroku-no-Mitsunouchi Ichi" has a "Kumigami-no-Sixty-Six-Six-no-uchi-Ichi" (a sketch of a kusago-jo-no-nai-no-uchi-ichi) with reference to this figure. It was published by Masashichi FUJIYA, a publisher of Shinsaibashi Ando-ji Temple-cho, Osaka." Last edited by John Wagenseil; 02-23-2025 at 11:24 AM. |
