Don Boose: Thank you Don. As usual your are much too flattering. It's just paper.

Mike: sorry for not answering your question earlier, I simply missed it (Senior moment?). The rig of the first model is a usual sprit sail rig. The sail is spread by a boom. The second model has a so-called standing gaff rig. We see it a lot on Statenjachts. The gaff is not hoisted and lowered, but the sail is drawn to the mast to be furled. Because the latter has to cross the sea to sail from North to south Holland and reverse, some more sail might not be superfluous.

Fred: well, as a matter of facts he made this view of the roadstead of Texel, where all the ships were waiting for a good eastern wind to escape from the lee shore, which because of the prevailing western wind makes approaching the Dutch waters very easy, but leaving a real struggle.
