WAK "Saettia" 1/100
A nice surprise on the day before Turkey Day.
Mailed on the 10th.. received on the 25th.. Cost including.. model.. laser frames.. shipping, came to almost $21. I did not get the cloth sails. Considering IMO the quality of the model, well worth it. Should be a good winter project, and as slow as I build, with breaks in-between for smaller projects, probably well into summer. A lot of detail for a model that is just over 11 inches in length. Details are from the WAK website.. scale: 1:100 designer: T. Weremko skill level: 3/5 sheets with parts: 8 assembly drawings: 33 available accessories: laser cut frames/details, sails from canvas Saettia sailing ships sailed the Mediterranean from the thirteenth to the eighteenth century. She was used not only for commerce, but also as an auxiliary unit in military actions. Model not very big, but requires a lot of time to build. Model has English instruction inside. Package.. Sinbad
Hello Peter,
Nice selection. The "Saettia" reminds me of the ship props used in the late '50s Sinbad films. I couldn't get enough of Ray Harryhausen's animation sequences. I'll be tagging along on your build. Good building, -Gil |

pages of parts & diagrams
Thanks Gil.. Wish now that I had ordered the other one "Trabaccolo", also by the same designer seeing the quality of this one. Promised my girlfriends daughter, that I would do this anime figure that she likes before working on anything else.
Here's some photos of parts and diagrams.. I love good diagrams.. |

Peter,
Looks like a very impressive model. Individual planks no less. I'll be watching to see you put your magic into this model. Jim

Thanks guys!!
Will start another thread when I do give it a go. Have a few things up on Ebay from my dumpster diving hobby, that if sold I'll buy the "Trabaccolo" also. If for no other reason, then to show support to the designer. Anyone else thinking of getting either one of these kits, you'll be doing yourself a service if you invest in the laser frames. A lot of small cuts in the bulkheads and supports that would be finicky to do cleanly. |

Great to see that you have another project underway, Peter. This one looks like a real challenge.
To my eye, this lateen-rigged saettia looks a lot like a caravel (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Caravel#External_links), although there may be specific differences unknown to me. From my limited knowledge of sailing ships and maritime history, I understand that caravels (Pinta and Nina, e.g.) and similar nimble, lateen-rigged vessels were the mainstays of the Age of Reconnaissance, with the deep-bellied carracks (like Santa Maria) carrying much of the trade, and the Mediterranean galleys used for fast transport and warfare. In any event, this looks like a deeply satisfying project, and I look forward to seeing your saettia take shape. Don |
