How about simply "PM-SIG"? Simple, to the point and unpretentious. Works for our forum after all. Regarding the concern over being taken seriously, 'proof is in the pudding' - the modeling should do all the 'talking' that is needed to convince anyone who needs it. More important is a catchy name for the SIG "newsletter" (like the "Bent Throttles" published by the Air Racing SIG. Good pub, BTW, wish I could get all the back issues...) Many SIG's engage in research projects, kit reviews and other shared group activities, documented and shared through the 'newsletter'. Also, if printed, the newsletter can serve to publisize the SIG's 'mission' and educate the unwashed (un-papered?) masses. So, if we go for the newsletter paradigm (which, btw, should be 'downloadable' per most paper kits these days) *that* really needs a good title - which could also provide a SIG members' 'nickname' for whenever & whereever the SIG physically meets (at conventions, pubs, whatever...) ala "the Sweating Beavers" (IPMS/CANADA) which, btw, is NOT the name of their publication!

Brainstorming ~ some fun names:

Pulpers (better as a nickname)
Paper Mashers (var. 'Smashers'; var. 'Slashers')
Scissor Hands
or simply "Pulp" (great name for a paper newsletter about paper modeling, eh?)
Pulp & Glue
Ink Smear
Crumpled Paper
Cutting Mat (nickname "Mat Monkeys")
Slash & Glue
Not Your Granpa's Paper
Got Pulp?

(you get the idea...)

Great thing about a PM newsletter - it can come with a kit! How's that for a "hook" - join the SIG and get free (and exclusive) kits... of course, that means someone has to design 'em! Try that with a plastic kit (well, some have tried... Airfix Club, Revell Club comes to mind...)

I can probably find someone to do some design work - I know a couple guys.

I do rather like pulp Have tried to get newsletters off the ground on a few occassions but it always falters. We need someone with experience in that to lead us. I try to do stuff like that but my inexperience in that stuff usually causes it to die out cause I dont know enough about it to keep it going.

For the SIG name you are really suggesting Paper Modelers - Special Interest Group as the full name right?

"Paper Modelers International" (PMI) is short and to the point.

sorry...PMI is too close to PMS

and International Paper Modelers = IPM = "I Peed Myself"

and World Wide Paper Modelers reminded me of "World Wide Pants"
(sorry Lauren, sorry Dave Letterman)

although... WPM is a good acronym.
(kinda like cpm?)

World Paper Modelers?

IHOP? International Hoarders of Paper
STP? "Stick that paper!"
FTP? "Fold that paper!"
HTTP? "Happy Times Through Paper!"

Sorry, that's been taken - sort of - (other than that I like it):

PaperModels.net

- - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - -

"International Paper Modelers = IPM = 'I Peed Myself'" - airdave

So you probably think IBM stands for "I had a Bowel Movement?"

How about "International Card Modelers?" (ICM) No Pee! BTW, SPT sounds a lot like STP (though I love the whimsy of it). Or, as my wife would say, "SPT? Spit, right?" She's funny that way.

Uh, I shouldn't told you that...

Haggard was right, I think I started a bunch of giggles going.
So, two names? One for the SIG (I vote for simple Paper Modeling SIG)
Second, one for the 'newsletter': I must go for "Pulp", though I am cautious - how well does that translate in other languages? Is the English word for 'pulp' a nasty word in Russian (for example) or is it okay? However, you cannot beat the word play possibilities:

Pulped - reviews
Pulp Fiction - SciFi subjects
Beat to a Pulp - militaria
Juiced, Juicy Pulp - industry news
Pul-pit - commentary

and so on...:D
