While I'd agree with you about that one (I'm also in New England), Pan Am doesn't have any GP38's. Their 4-axle EMD locomotives are all GP40's.

The very last NYC GP40s delivered before the Penn Central merger would be simplest, solid black marked only by herald and roadnumber on the cab. All NYC GP40's had dynamic brakes, but among the GP35s only 6199/2399 (pre- and post-1966 roadnumbers) had them. Pro Tip for design - If you can find a copy, Model Railroader Cyclopedia Vol. 2: Diesel Locomotives will be your best friend. Decoes will still be the sticky part but that'll at least get you the structure and greeblies. Bonus, if you do the work to cut the frame down for a GP35 that also gives you the foundation to build all prior Geeps on.

Addendum to my prior post: GP38 has two fans over the radiator section, GP40 has three.

And I second the recommendation for the MR Cyclopedia. That, and the Mainline Modeler digital archive (Digital Magazine: Mainline Modeler Complete Collection [AV-15-195] - $89.95 : Chessieshop, The C&O Historical Society's Online Store) are among the best references out there.

The real NYC 2372 was a post-1966 GP35, if memory serves built as 6172. (The 1966 roster realignment was based on horsepower ratings, aligning things for the PRR hostile-takeover under guise of "Penn Central merger.")
