Spirit of St. Louis (Fiddlers Green, 1/100)

Just completed this one today. Although the Fiddlers Green nominal scale is 1/60, I decided to reduce the size of my aircraft from now on (easier to store) - to a maximum of 1/100.

This is my second model from FG. I added Bare Metal Foil aluminium highlights to hide the dotted lines printed on the wing leading edge. The whiteness was toned down by brushing with fine aluminium powder, to better represent the metallic appearance of the real aircraft. I added a tail skid, elevator struts, and twisted the propeller blades (rather than have them flat). I thickened the wheels with card. The undercarriage took a while to work out but it came together very nicely. Each of the nine engine barrels was made from two sizes of punched discs (stacked). Dilute PVA was used to strengthen the joints and propeller blades and the model was given a final coat of matt varnish (sprayed).

Sometimes the simple models are the most fun. Nice work.
