Technology Types discussion

Feel free to move this post if it's not in the correct thread...

I think the first thing that needs to be done model design wise is sort out the game universe technology. Nothing intense, just basic design concepts like will space ships have engine booster outlets (ala star-wars-style) or magnetic field type (Star Trek) or some such.

Creating a unified idea in the beginning will save a lot of headache and time for the designers...

I'm kinda leaning towards the rocket-type, it creates an easier framework to work from right off the bat, without need to focus on mechanics and science too much.

Any thoughts?

Thought this was better suited

What is easier to design? Also we can start with one type and add other types later as game development continues into expansion packs

Cool beans!

I don't think there's a difference in difficulty, both types are designable, I personally just think the rocket-type design gives a little bit more restriction design-wise without going too much into concepts of science.
For example I don't want to get stuck in a star trek discussion on if the engine nacelles need to be clear of the ship, built into the ship, be symmetrical, yaddayadda.
I don't think the tech of this game needs to be too intricate in the beginning. Like you said, we can always add other types as the development continues, maybe even alternate scientific universes eventually, but for now, let's keep it simple.
