I've seen a CO2 laser cutter in action with 1mm card and was struck by how much smoke was generated. So much so you have to have a scrubbing system. Are the diode lasers easier to live with?

Regards,

Charlie

@scetoaux: I haven't done any engraving yet but the machine is designed to cut and engrave. there is a lot of information available on their website.

@charliec: well, I have not seen visible smoke so far but I can definitely smell the burnt paper. I suppose the amount of smoke generated depends on the amount of material burnt away and the duration of the cutting/engraving.

Could be Maybe...,

Charlie,

I noticed that they sell a "fire blanket" on the site so where there's smoke there's ...,

There is very rarely visible smoke from the cutting process in my experience - just the odd tiny wisp, particularly if the laser power is set too high. Perhaps because the laser is blue rather than the Chinese gas lasers red light?

However there is a noticeable "burnt paper" smell that means it gets anti-social to use it too much in the main house. Our utility room off the kitchen has a table and an outside door and I cut in there with the back door open.

I did invest in a small soldering station extractor fan with a charcoal filter for when it is too cold to have the door open, but haven't used it yet.

Darkly labs have been talking about enclosures and extractor possibilities for some time but haven't produced anything yet.

It can't hurt to ask.

All you folks with laser cutters: Would you consider producing some 1/200 ship railings for sale from 65# or 90# cardstock? It would be so nice to not have to order them from Poland, or to not have to pay an arm and a leg for photo-etch brass. And there seem to be plenty of ship-builders on this forum.

You could also sell them on the ship-modelers' forums.

Cheers,
--David

What's a reasonable "shipped" price? I could probably figure that out if you could shoot me some dimensions / desired size / plans (I'm not a ship-builder).

I would definitely second the 1/200 ship railings! I miss the oldAvantCard railings, the design of the parts was excellent!

I didn't think of using the emblaser 'commercially' when buying it but it is an idea I may consider in the future. I am still learning how get optimum results. also I am not sure if I want to deal with payment, delivery, quality expected by the customer and all the jazz. I work full time and this is strictly a hobby...at this time

It's going to be healthier for your lungs to put in a setup that exhaust the air outside of your building. Carbon is not good for you.
