USB Issue

I haven't post anything in quite some time as I have been dealing with some health issues and just recently we moved to a new house. I apologize for my absence.

That said, I have an issue that has severely compromised my current laptop. Yesterday when I inserted a "known good" flash drive into the usb port, nothing happened except for the usual chime sound. The drive did not show up in file explorer and when I checked the flash drive on another laptop it worked just fine.

I used device manager to look at the usb ports and one had a "code 38" error. I have attached a screenshot of that error. I used device manager to uninstall the usb port and the error persisted when I re-inserted the flash drive. This flash drive contains sensitive information that I need to access and of course I cannot update any of my backup flash drives for this PC.

I have also run a windows registry cleaner (eusing) and attempted to update the driver for this device. Windows assured me that the driver is up to date.

I don't want to use one of those "update all your drivers" apps since they tend to be full of malware.

Any suggestions would be appreciated.

At this point I don't really want to replace this laptop since it's fairly new. And without a usb option on this PC I would need to pull the hard drive and slave it to a new laptop just to get all of the files off of it. Fortunately, I did file my taxes early this year, so I just need to recover the pdf's of the tax forms.

I really do appreciate this forum. It has given me a great deal of pleasure and entertainment over the years

Curt

Windows can handle the USB Flash Drive on its own without the need to download any new drivers or apps.
However, if the device is an older one, it may not recognize a flash drive over a specific size.
I've got a 256GB micro pocket flash drive that my tablet will not recognize, but my PC sometimes does.

Is this flash drive big?
Has it worked before on this laptop?

Try loading windows in safe mode and uninstall the driver for the flash drive.
Then restart the system, put the flash drive in (as if its the very first time)
and let Windows install anew.
(What version Windows is it?)

Registry cleaners are scary things...they often do as much damage as good.
Be warned.

Have you plugged anything else into the usb port just to make sure it works?
If it does, ignore that 38 error for now...this has nothing to do with whether the USB port is working.
The code 38 has to do with the flash device driver installed.

oh good find...I'm saving this info.
I haven't experienced this issue myself with Win 10, but its good to know.
Win 10 seems to have too many issues (in my opinion).

I knew about the Win 10 self troubleshooter...thats why I asked what version Windows.
I was assuming Curt was still on Win 7.

Glad Rick has something more to offer.

re: uninstalling drivers and the like.
The code 38 error solution involves uninstalling the device driver for the usb device.
Sometimes they will not properly uninstall, unless you are in safe mode, as I said.

Rick and Dave,

Thanks for the great info. I'll take a look at that article. I did manage to fix this error by holding down the X key while shutting down the PC. Apparently that flushes the system memory.

Thanks again,

Curt

I do have one other question. How do I stay logged in to this forum? I had to log in more than once to post my original question.

Thanks,

Curt

Actually, it was holding down the shift key while turning the PC off, like the article said.

To stay logged in, you can check the box that says Remember Password, and that will keep you signed in to the forum until you log out, no matter how many times you close the browser.

If that doesn't work, search for the Papermodelers cookie in your browser, and delete it, and then log back in, that should(in theory) allow you to log in to the forum, and continue browsing.

You said you "cleaned the registry".
Did you use a program like C-Cleaner, or some other program that cleans out a whole bunch of stuff,
including cleaning the registry?

if so, it most likely wiped out all your cookies and temp files.
The cookie for this site kept you logged in.

And if you had to log in multiple times, your browser is set to not accept cookies.
This is all okay.

As Rick says, check the box to stay logged in and another cookie will be sent.
But your browser may block it again.

You have to let your browser accept the cookie,
or have your cleaning app save the desired cookies.

(My browsers are set to "block third party cookies" only.
This way the select cookies will get saved.
My browser is also set to clear cache, history and temp files when I close it...but not cookies.)
