Recoloring Help

Need some help with recoloring a model. I've been using PaintShop Pro for minor touchup however I would like to do a complete color swap.

Any recommendations on another method or maybe a good tutorial for PaintShop?

I use PSP all the time... I've upgraded to X2 but have used it since maybe version 5.

Your question is a little vague to me. I replace colors in different ways. If it is a large area of a common color I just use "Fill" and dump in the new color. If I want to extend an area, I sometimes use "Clone Brush."

Frequently I use "Magic Wand" to select just the areas I want - perhaps so that I can do some shading and blurring - create a new layer and do my work up there before dropping it down on the original layer.

...BTW, Phil is the real expert for PSP.

Thanks Carl,
I am somewhat familiar with those processes as they apply to photo enhancement however I thought maybe there was some other process available, I will work with your suggestions.
What about adding details, like a stripe in another color, can that be done in PaintShop?

First off you need to dupicate your original and work only on the duplicate. That way if you really mess up you have the original to go back too. (Yes, that advice comes from experience :o )

PSP has a color replacer tool where you can choose the color you want to replace and choose the color you want to change it to. You can mess around with the settings to get the change you want.

There is also a touch up tool that helps in making subtle changes to colors.

To add a different colored stripe it would be best to create another layer and paint the stripe there. You can change the opacity. size, position, and other stuff until you get the effect you want then merge the stripe layer with the original as Carl pointed out.

Working with layers really helps out a lot.

I use PhotoShop, so I'm not sure if this relates, but always use a different layer for each color, and major group like markings, shading, rivets, etc...

Also check out Simmers Paint Shop Simmers Paint Shop they deal mostly with fight simulator aircraft repaints, but the tutorials are very good and are relevant to our little hobby.

I'm certainly no expert, but thanx for the vote Carl!

You can also change the hue. This method works best where there is shading.

Open the image and choose: Colors/ adjust/ hue, saturation, lightness, OR Colors/ adjust/ red, green, blue. It may not be exact science but is fun to play with.

I do however prefer the color replacer tool. Use the tool options and play with the tolerance until it replaces all desired pixels.

As far as tutorials go, try to find Paint Shop Pro POWER! I believe it was released with version 6. If you cannot find it and desperately need it, I suppose I could mail a copy to you.

Thanks!

Looks like I need some reference material and get more proficient with layers.
