It's been an abundant week. The Felixstowe F2a is now available.
![]() Get it here A brief(ish) history of this particular plane, from here "British flying boats like the Felixstowe F.2A and the Curtiss H.16 had powerful defensive armament which gave them a good chance of beating off an attack from most directions, but on many occasions German pilots attacked the big flying boats from their blind spots; the British gunners couldn't return fire without damaging their own tail unit. This new tactic proved successful, and the British designers were challenged to come up with an answer. One standard late-built Felixstowe F.2A was specially equipped with an additional gun position in the middle of the upper wing, with a curved cupola provided for the gunner. This position was ideal for upper hemisphere defense, because with a 360 degree field of fire there were no blind spots for enemy fighters to exploit. This modified aircraft (serial number N4543) was delivered to 230 Squadron on July 6, 1918. There is little historical data about its successes or failures but it is known that it attacked a U-boat with a bomb on July 9, 1918. Any plans to fit this extra gun on other Felixstowes were cancelled as the war approached its end; attacks by German naval fighters were now rare. N4543 served until November 9, 1918, when it suffered a forced landing due to a fuel system problem and sank." |

Oh no, On no, I am paralyzed with indecision, from being offered too much wonderfulness, but having limited space and time.
Should I order the Curtis H-16 or the Felixstow F2a? |

Murph –
I bought both of your Viking (Lockheed US-3) models and am definitely going to try to build the US-3A transport version because, by a remarkable coincidence, this is the very same airplane – Serial 7995, Aircraft No. 715, that I flew in from Atsugi Naval Air Station, Japan, to USS Carl Vinson (CVN-70) on 16 March 1990. At the time, I was the Assistant Chief of Staff J-5 (Chief of Strategic Planning and Policy) at Headquarters, U.S. Forces, Japan, at Yokota Air Base. The chief of staff was a Navy captain who knew I liked airplanes, so while Vinson was operating in the Sea of Japan, he arranged for me to get a flight out and back. This is my log entry: “USN US 3A 7995 (715) VCR 50 (Lt Kevin Gallagher, Lt Bryan Pender, PO2 Scott Silver) Atsugi NAS to USS Carl Vinson and return (one trap, one cat) 16 Mar 90.” I took the photographs below on that day. Image 3 is of Lieutenant Gags Gallagher and the crew chief, PO2 Silver, pre-flighting the aircraft. Image 4 is of Gallagher, me, and Pender next to the aircraft. Image 5: LT Gags Gallagher. Image 6: Gallagher let me handle the controls for a while when we were safely over the SOJ, so this is me, “Flying jets for the Navy.” I shot the rest of the photos through the windscreen. 7: After the break and approaching the carrier. 8: About to land. 9: Taxiing after landing. I was aboard the ship for a couple of hours, watching flight operations from the bridge, then we flew back to Atsugi. 10: Taxiing to the catapult. 11: On the cat. I couldn’t take a photo as the cat fired since the g-force pinned my arms down. Thanks for this one, Murph! I have it printed out at 1/72 and hope to actually get this one built. Don |

Not really much of a coincidence. Whenever I'm developing a model, I search the forum to see if there's mentions of other versions, and I cane across you telling that story in an old thread. When I put the tail number into google, lots of good pictures came up.
