The "HASSALO" (a build thread)

This is the second of a proposed series of six ships known as the, "Middle River Series".

A brief synopsis can be found here-> Hassalo (1880 sternwheeler - Wikipedia)

I'll start by posting these renderings that were done in autocad, a few views of the ship as well as it in comparison to the much large Oneonta, same scale, 1:150

The rapids

This is the photo that made the Hassalo famous, it was a well publicized event and spectators came upstream from Portland Oregon in charter ships to view the event, to see a ship move at, "a mile a minute" (60 m.p.h / 96.561 k.p.h.) must have really been something to witness, you can see the spectators lining the river banks.

The ships upon their retirement on the middle river were sent downstream, through the rapids, this would be done in the spring when spring run off was at it's highest and subsequently, the rapids at their swiftest.

In 'The Rapids' photo, is that an inclined railway in the background?

Nope vermin, no inclined railway, just an illusion, potential the further river bank.

This image was taken at the head of the rapids, just starting it's "voyage" through the rapids, to the right of this image is a spit of land that would become, "thunder island" when the Cascade Locks were built around 1900 (and still exist today), with the building of Bonneville Dam in the 1930's these rapids were all swallowed by the lake that formed upstream from the dam.

I've often heard it said that these were comparable to, "mississippi style" sternwheelers and sidewheelers, I would then contend that the Mississippi ships were broad, shallow draft and flat bottomed whereas these middle river ships were notably sharp and narrow.

I was just curious.

I've been fascinated by inclined railways since I was a kid. Living in Independence, Missouri (first railway west of the Mississippi), I always wondered why they invested in the railway from Independence to the bluffs above the Wayne City Landing, but they never had an inclined railway set-up to get materials from the river up to the railway.

Daisey Ainsworth

To be even more specific, this image was taken along the bank where the Washington side of The "Bridge of the Gods" is currently located, thunder island and the locks are clearly visible upstream when crossing the bridge.

in late summer when the dam has minimal reserve, the remnants of the wreckage of the, "Daisey Ainsworth" lays on the rocks at the head of the rapids, it struck there on a "moonlight run", overshot the destination and wrecked with 210 head of cattle in it's cargo deck. the ship was only three years old, "pride of the line", and named after the founder and captain's daughter, because it was only in service for three years, research materials are limited, I would have to be there in person to do further research.
