1mm & 0.5mm Depron Foam

Hi Everyone,

I'm thinking about going to Anchorage soon and getting some items out of my storage unit.

I have between 150 -240 sqft of 1mm depron foam. I noticed that more and more modelers are using this for sandwiching formers.

I bought it originally to make depron airplanes, but don't like how easy the models crunch when landing hard.

The foam is in 4ftwide x 10-15ft long rolls, but I could cut it up into flat sheets for shipping. Colors are white, pink and yellow.

It can be "hot" water formed.

Anyone interested in buying some? Price is negotiable (especially if you want it all). Buyer to pay actual shipping costs.

The 0.5mm is in 13"x19" sheets, but I'm not sure if I still have all of them. Will look once I get to Anchorage.

Prices Per Sheet for Depron Foam

There seems to be some interest in my Depron Foam.

I have 16-sheets of 0.5mm depron - Size is 12.5" x 18.5" [317.5mm x 469.9mm]. My cost was over $3 per sheet. It would be possible to cut these to smaller sizes, but I prefer to sell them this size.

I have some shipping envelopes they will fit in.

Cost for this size of 0.5mm will be $1.50 per sheet + shipping.

The 1mm foam will have the following prices:

US Letter & A4 size = 25 cents per sheet + shipping
US Legal size = 40cents per sheet + shipping
11"x17" & A3 sheets = 50 cents per sheet + Shipping
12"x18" = 56-cents per sheet

I have a limited number of shipping envelopes that the 0.5mm foam will fit, so they have a priority on the shipping using my envelopes.

Just checked the shipping prices for USPS Priority Flat rate boxes/envelopes:

Envelope (12.5" x 9.5") = $4.95 US / $11.95 Canada & Mexico / $13.95 others
Envelope Legal size (15"x9.5") = $4.95 US / $11.95 Canada & Mexico / $13.95 others

Small Flate rate box (8-5/8" x 5-3/8") = $5.20 US / $11.95 Canada & Mexico / $13.95 others
Medium Flate rate box = (11"x8.5") or (15-5/8 x 11-7/8")= $10.95 US / $27.95 Canada & Mexico / $45.50 others
Large Flat Rate Box = (12x12) = $14.95 US / $35.50 Canada & Mexico / $58.50 others.

I can also send these by regular 1st class mail if they weigh below 13-ounces. The cost is lower than the flate rates, but did not list them becuase of there are so many different sizes/rates available.

If you're interested in buying some, please PM with your order and I will try to find the cheapest shipping to your location.

I've mailed some sheets last summer-the cardboard used to sandwich these into an envelope weighs more than the foam.

Best regards,
Mike Bauer

Issues With Foam-Colors Available and Cutting

Quick Update:

White 1mm foam is all gone.

1mm in Pink or Yellow is still available.

13-sheets of white 0.5mm still available.

The other two issues:
-I have to use a black marker when cutting them to size, along certain edges this mark will show.
-Unrolling the foam is a big hassle, the edges want to crack/break and when trying to get it to lay flat, weights have to be added which causes some crinkling of the foam.

If you sandwich the foam between cardstock these issues shouldn't be a problem, but thought I better mention them up front just in case.

Mike

Depron Foam Crinkling

These fold lines are what I'm calling crinkling.

Almost no way to stop them while cutting. The foam is very brittle and tries to roll back into a round shape.

I'm posting this photo in case you're interested in getting some, but wanted you to see the damage done when trying to cut it to size.

a) How much of the .05mm have you got left?

b) Where did you get this stuff in the first place?

Hi Jim,

I got the 1mm foam from a place called "Foamfly", but they haven't had any since I bought the last from them in 2003. Can't find the link for their site when I just checked. Name might not be correct-it has been awhile.

The 0.5mm came from "Sams" in the UK. They are out of the 0.5mm the last time I checked. http://www.samsmodels.com/

If you check the styrofoam dinner plate thread there is a link at the bottom of the 1st page =
Depron and EPP Foam Suppliers, Carbon Fiber Sheets, Carbon Rods and Tubes, RC Model Airplane Engines and RC Electric Motor Mounts, Flat Foam RC Airplanes

Someone else has asked for some of the 0.5mm foam, I'll contact you when that order is filled-not sure how much will be left for sure. If you want some-you have second choice, others will be after you.

Does this help at all?

Thanks for your interest.

Best regards,
Mike Bauer

Have you tried stroking the blade across a wax candle before cutting. Works for some things - don't know about this material though - never tried it.

Hi Looker,

Guess my text was confusing. The cutting is real easy.

What the problem is, is when the roll is unrolled, the foam bows up and tries to return to a roll shape. I have to lay a weight on it to stop it. Cement board in photo.

Once I put the weight on it, the crease along the bottom of the roll happens as shown in the photo above.

I use a 1x8 board as a cutting surface, once again the crinkling (crease) happens when the foam is elevated for the cuts. You can see these "folds" as well.

It would be easier to just send the rolls, but the cost to ship is almost $60 for the 4ft long box.

Thank you for the tip! Can use it when cutting heavier ceral boxes, great idea, wouldn't have thought of it, but now, since you mentioned it, probably will work great!

Best regards,
Mike Bauer
