Rocket Glider: Aerotech 18mm RMS D2.3T

Last weekend my main plan was to build the 1/60 Saturn V I have printed out ready to cut and build.

Then got to thinking about the subsonex and how bad I want one. Working on that right now. Looking at the lines got to thinking it might be a good choice for the Aerotech 18mm RMS with plugged engine.

Spent Saturday designing and printing (printed twice-had issues with 1st printing).

Doing a test build of a Subsonex designed for Aerotech 18mm RMS, D2.3T.

A few photos of the build-still have Elevons, wing tips and engine nacelle to add before weight and balance testing.

This is the first prototype-next version will have R/C controls. This one is to see how stable it is. Plan a whole flight test series to see if it will work for the Aerotech.

My problem is where to mount the launch lug...

Photos show inside view of model-there is ink where normally it would be white-reprint on same paper cardstock as first printing.

Photos 1786 & 1789 show the markings on the balsa wood parts, a partially constructed fuselage.

Subsonex:
30" Wingspan
26 - 1/4" Long
Weighs 3 oz total paper weight.
Weighs 3.8 oz with B6-4 installed for engine size fit test

Printed on Two Springhill Index 90LB (163gsm) 22.5"x35" cardstock sheets. Just about out of these light weight sheets-placed an order for some Cougar Smooth White 65# Cover [176gsm] sheets that are 24"x40".

This cardstock is half again as smooth as Index, 96 Brightness when the Index has a 92 rating. Until now have been a Tag and Index fan. Totally surprised to find out I can get some really long sheets when purchasing Cover cardstock. The smoothness and brightness really bring out the colors of inkjets. 10-times better looking than Index or Tag.

Bought a box of 500, they weigh over 140lbs to ship to Alaska. Leaving NJ for Auburn, WA where I have an account with a freight forwarder to put on a boat to Alaska. Fairly cheap way to get items to Alaska instead of FedEx or UPS.

BTW-Really looking hard at buying a real subsonex. My airplane has increased in value-I could sell and buy the complete kit, shipping, and the optional ballistic parachute for the whole jet. The taxes from the sale though are why it isn't listed just yet....Oh, and the $100 an hour fuel bill; not going to mention the $10,000 a year insurance coverage.

You are going to launch that thing on a rocket then have RC guidance as it glides to a landing?

Yes.

Aerotech has some reloadable engines designed without an ejection charge. They are longer burning after the initial blast off, they reduce thrust and allow for altitude. Once they burn out you just fly the glider back.

Designed a model years ago for Rapier engines, then they went out of business.

On a rocket site complaining about low thrust glider engines, the lack of availability: Aerotech PM'd me about their glider engines.

Decided to give it a try. Here is the first try.

Just about done with gluing-Engine nacelle and Hook last things to glue on.

Here is a link of an outfit that already has these engines flying to give an idea how they work: Small R/C rocket gliders flying on Aerotech 18mm D2.3 longburn motor - YouTube

Subsonex Glue Complete

Parts have been glued in place, model now weighs 3.1oz., 3.9oz with engine in it.

Hook has been added lower front. Plan to use rubber band and stick to launch for flight testing. If not powerful enough, have a wrist rocket...

Will let glue set for 24-hours. Re-weigh and then weight and balance for flight. Hoping it comes in under 5oz.
