X-31

A while back I saw a post from Billy Leliveld about not being able to find a model of the X-31. So I saw that it was out of print. I then got curious about what Billy was talking about. Looked it up and liked it. Then I saw that it took Billy 3 years to find one. Well I didn't want to wait that long so I cranked up the design software and went to work. I saw the website Billy linked to for the photos of the build so I started at the rear of the plane as that is the most interesting part and am working my way to the front. Here are some pics, I think I am going to build the german vector version of this plane as it has lots of graphics that look good, and is also the easier to find photo reference to,
Tail section
Vector Bottom Graphic

Vector Paddles

Long View.

I used printed sheets of blue on 20# bond paper and then cut them out like decals and glued them onto the white model to get the graphics right and then I will cut it apart and scan it into the computer to use as a seprate layer to get the lines in the right spot on the unwraps. This is doing it the hard way but seems to be fool proof.

Thanks I'm glad you like it. Texman I decided to just build what makes me happy and what I'm interested in and I'm not going to worry about whether or not it already exists. Just build em and make em better. '
Hey Billy. I'm glad you got hold of a copy I think I read that in a thread somewhere. Scale. Well I try to work between 1:72 and 1:32 when I am designing but to tell you the truth they are all vectored, so I move the scale around as I build different parts to see more detail, and less when I want to white model the whole thing quickly.
What you see in the pics is 1:32 scale approx. 9in wingspan and about 16 or so inches length.

Looking hard at that x-29 seems to be along the same lines.
Yes I plan on releasing when I get the kinks out and some beta builds done. Hopefully in the very near future.

That looks beautiful! Excellent design work Mldixon!your 31 looks fantastic.

Do you use butt joints for the body? I ask because the joints are so clean and smooth.

No butt joints on mock up just burnish the joint on rounded dowel backer rod. Kinda like an anvil in sheet metal work. Will use butt joints on finshed model.

That's funny Billy. Now that would be a quick build for sure. Lookin into it.
