MM Aviation Contest- J7W1 SHINDEN
Contrary to all my preferences, I've decided to go ahead with the Shinden as my choice for my next MM aircraft. While there are other kits I'm more excited about building, I've had an itch to do this one for a long while, so this will be my attempt to scratch that itch.
DISCLAIMER: This kit was designed by Bohdan Wasiak and may be crushed, burned, shredded or simply abandoned at any point in the construction attempt! The kit is of what is probably the most immediately identifiable profile in WWII Japanese aircraft due to it's canard design. The design had only three aircraft built with only one with any flying time; about 45 min. The kit itself is simple, if it fits. It does not come with any interior, nor is there any option for fitting one in, so I think I'll probably try to fit one in. ... if I can find some reference for it. As is my fashion, my scans messed the color up considerably, but it doesn't look like the kit's original colors are very accurate to begin with. There's a misalignment on the red circle on one wing, but I'm not going to worry about it. I also have Mr. Trotskiy's wonderful little Shinden model as a good luck charm on this build, so my hopes are high! Chris |

There is the film of the actual plane ready for flight just 12 days prior to the surrender. It is the Magnificent Lightning.

Nice find, KGL. I had not known the aircraft actually flew until seeing that video.

Great choice!
I built this kit ages ago and had plenty of fun flying it around the house :D

There's plenty of info available on the prototype. Here's a good intro site;

Great subject Chris, can't say the same about the designer though. I'm sure you will be up to the challenge.
Have you seen Rizky's (tekzo) Sanka Mark B design thread? link to thread -> Sanka Mark B 1/48 "the sky crawlers" The Sanka B is a fictional updated Shinden from the movie Sky Crawlers. Last edited by B-Manic; 09-22-2009 at 05:12 PM. Reason: picture crosspost is a must see |

I gotta go with outstanding find Oksana. I never knew it actually lifted off, much less there is film of it. Thanks.

I love the look of the Sanka! I really like the color scheme as well. I know Ojimak's got one in progress as well.
The Shinden was originally designed to become a turbo-jet when the engines became available, which, of course, they didn't. But it sure makes you wonder! Chris PS. Now that I think of it, Trotskiy's had one pictured on his site for a while now as well. Wonder if he'll ever make his available? |
