MM model contest - Piotr z Gdan'ska
OK - I know I would not build a MM model even on a double dog dare. But here goes. This one is a very popular subject in the MM stable this is one of three different versions I have and the newest. Of the three this one has the best art work and the poorest instructions. More to follow . . .

Very cool. Always wanted to see this one built. The older kit doesn't fit very well.

I will follow this with interest; I have what I guess is an older kit based on the artwork.

Hopefully the fit on this one is better than the earlier versions.
I built the formers with Crescent(R) illustration board. One side covered with 24 lb paper and the other with the formers scanned and printed on 110 lb paper. This results in just under 2mm of thickness. My shoulders are sore from cutting out the parts. The whole thing is glued together with white tacky PVA, not too carefully applied but filling all gaps. The upper cutout pieces have been treated with CA glue for strength and to prevent delaminating during construction. Anyway, a couple of days for the glue to dry then I will sand it into submission. |

Looks really impressive! Wish I could do work as clean as that. "Well begun is half done", so you're on the easy side of it now, right?

Great looking hull skeleton. Now I wonder if I was crazy for buying this model myself....

It looks great Douglas. 1mm Crescent Board is excellent material, but I don't envy you cutting out all those curved frames from that very hard stuff.

Thanks to all
- the board is hard to cut, but it does provide a very strong structure to build on. There are not that many formers. It took me a good four hours to cut them out, and another two to assemble and glue. The real challenge is going to be building and attaching the fore and aft castles given the very sparse build diagrams that do not include some of the required information. The written instructions are, of course, in Polish so not very useful to me. I think I have figured out most of the main deck and the area under the castles. The rigging looks pretty straight forward at this point, although I want to come up with more realistic looking sails. I plan on filling in between the formers on the lower hull with 1mm cardstock this should give me a good surface to apply the plank construction hull. First, I have to get some more work done on the Kolywopter beta build. The picture is of Peter Von Danzig raising the main mast. ~ cheers Douglas Last edited by B-Manic; 09-23-2009 at 11:58 AM. |

What do you use as a cutting tool on that laminated Crescent board?
