FG H-19 (S-55 Repaint)

If you are doing Mods and repaints of the S-55, How about a mod of a mod. A place in Florida that had been making MI-24 outs of S-55 for the Army to use as RC targets.

Whoa, that's quite the mod. I don't think I'll be going quite that far. But I hope someone does! I do like the Hind. Probably my #3 fave helo.

I started work today on this crazy little journey. I began by building a junk print of the fuselage so I can mock-up the interior bits without damaging the fancy paper.


I decided to start by making a floor and rear bulkhead out of 1mm cardboard


From there, I started making the first set of jump seats for the cargo area. I measured the area and then made a line template for bending a wire (paper clip) to make the seat frame.


Next came the actual seating surface. Using what I know from having sat in a few jump seats, I wanted a little sag in the seat area, while having the front and back wrap around the frame. First, I made the simple form, then glued it to the frame and colored it.




Then, I set about making the mesh seat backs for the jump seats. I used a few pictures of the real seats, and made things as small as I could without tearing the paper. Lots of tiny 1-2 mm lines


Next, I bent up a frame for the back and bottom legs of the seat, using another line drawing as a template


The jump seats were then assembled


Test fit in the cargo bay


The last work for the day came in making the rotor shaft housing/cockpit backing and interior. I used the cockpit section from the model to create a template for the housing, and then built up the base and sides from 1 mm card

That's all for today. Tomorrow I hope to get the other jump seat bench done, and maybe some cockpit rough work.


BTW- I don't know why I colored the seats red. I KNOW they were olive drab. Maybe I'll find some paints later.

Hehe. i actually used to help my neighbor build her doll houses that she sold to people. Funny, I never saw a penny of that money. Hmm...

I decided to leave the seats red, as I'm going to be putting an olive drab interior in, and they would blend in if they matched color. Currently I'm finishing up the longer seat for the other side. Then, it's figure out cockpit time.

I'm also going to redo the model file, as the insignia and "U.S. Air Force" text are kind of blurry. I'm going to take a much cleaner file and use that instead. Then, I of course will send the better files to Chip :p

The H-19 was a little before my time, but red nylon jump seats were very familiar, especially from the C-119, C-123, and C-130. Your detail's marvelous and you're well on the way to a great model.

The AF helo that sticks in my mind was the Kaman Husky. But could it be possible to design a paper model that keep the rotors from injuring each other?
