Painting Assistance
Ok, world's lousiest painter here. Looking for suggestions on how to paint the mounting wires to look like tracer fire.
The AC-47 had limited sensors and was manually aimed - guns fixed and bore-sighted (if that makes any sense when shooting sideways). Impact point was adjusted by maneuvering the plane - hence the requirement for tracers to see where the bullet stream was going. Tracers don't look like a continuous line (no laser beam effect) but a dashed line of luminous streaks. At high firing rates the bright streaks are longer than just the "dot" of the bullet - persistence of vision effect. Tracers are usually only a portion of the ammo load - say one in every six bullets. US tracers are usually orange-red and the bad guys greenish - or "good" tracers are out going and bad ones incoming, regardless of color. Any thoughts? Yogi YouTube - My AC-47 Gunship (Spooky13) Aircraft and Crew Link to the video rather than embedded so you can peruse the related videos as well. A few slick C-47 shots cut in on takeoff - otherwise looks authentic |

Hi Yogi,
Great build! Like your descriptions and techniques. Fishing line with paint dots for the tracers? Seems like once you've seen them, the picture always remains with you! Mike |

Classic picture murph - but remember, you're typing to the world's worst painter here. Any specific ideas/techniques on how to capture that image? Bit of time lapse in the photo also ...
Nice idea, nh. Need to see if I can find strong enough plastic rod that thin (glass would be stiff enough, but don't want that hazard). Now, just how do I do the fade? Blob of paint and pull it out with a brush or ...? Mike - nice idea. Would work for a ground vehicle, except here the rods are holding up the model. Not overly practicalor maybe even not possible, but here's an idea..
-Make the supports out of a clear plastic rod. I'm sure hobby shops have something you can use. -Carefully bend another plastic rod into a C shape enough to simulate the path the plane has taken, and attach it to the last support rod. -Run fiberoptic cables from below the ground to the rod in the cone shape. -Put a red/orange highspeed flashing light under the base at the ends of the fiberoptic cables. Dunno if this can even be done, but I bet it would look cool, especially in dim light. And no painting involved.:D |
