Ancient Chinese Land Yacht
I was watching a show on the History Channel about ancient technology, and they did a segment on ancient chinese sail powered carts. Then they built one, and proved that it actually worked.
Of course I was inspired, and came up with this. I'm going to upload it to the downloads section as a freebie, but I can't figure out how. Can somebody give me some help? I looked all over, and couldn't find an "upload" button. |

Aaron,
When you go to the downloads tab, in the middle of the page are a set of "tabs", Main, Search, Add, etc. Add is the one you want.

I found that shortly after the message edit feature went off. Except it says I'm missing a security token, so I can't upload.

I know nothing of the security token issue. Perhaps Rick knows that one. But, if you want, you can send me the file and I can get it uploaded for you. I think. I've never actually tried it!

That look pretty cool. Is it gonna roll in the breeze?
I saw that same show. Lots of cool stuff from way back when.

I figured what I was doing wrong and got it uploaded. I had saved it as a .rar at 32MB. A few tweaks to the .pdf compression and resave as a .zip at 1 mb, and up it went.
(Note to self...Site doesn't like .rar files) SCE: With some modifications, it could be made to roll in the wind. I've never actually built it...I ran out of cardstock, and haven't been able to get more. So if anybody wants to build it and post some pics, I'd appreciate it. As for rigging... I didn't see enough of the actual car to figure out the rigging, so you are on your own, although I do remember seeing chains connecting the footboard to the front axle.. Even in the 1600's they built sailing wagons, see the picture. It is an amazing concept, and could transport quite a number of people at 70 km/hr. This one was constructed in 1601 by Stevin Stevin, a Dutch mathematician, inventor of the decimal system. Would make for an awesome model...

I'm familiar with Chinese sail-powered wheelbarrows, but didn't know about carriages! Great idea for a model subject!
A lot of amazing technological innovation in Chinese history! Scon10, thanks for that post, I didn't know about Stevin's wonderful "wind wagons"! Last edited by Art Deco; 04-05-2011 at 02:16 PM. |

I'm also testing out my new logo and page layout. I'd love to get everybody's opinion.
