I don't believe there's a NASA 104 out there except for a stomp rocket version.

All B-57 variants, except the F model were of Canberra(British) design and pretty much followed the original "A" footprint.

Some of the "D'" models were modified for photo reccon, high altitude missions, which they did well in. These modifications included a longer wing, that apparently made it a more stable photo platform.

When the US was looking for an stand-in, waiting for the U-2's to become more available, they looked for something that was already available and realized that the 'longwing' D's were doing a halfway decent job, so they (General Dynamics, Dallas) won the contract to take the existing airframe of 21 'standard' B-57 A's, B's and D's and began rebuilding them with the longer wing.

I'm guessing they chose the longer wing style because it was more efficient at higher altitude and also more stable......it turned out being a completely new airplane, with no interchangeable parts with the earlier B-57 models.

This is a very condensed, quickie version of a much more complex story as to why....

Please feel free to correct, modify, alter this info to make it more correct.

This is my version and I'm not sticking to any of the details.

Probably the wings again. Getting wing parts onto pages as large as possible. With the WB having longer wings, they could be spread out onto multiple pages? I honestly don't know. Just sounded good in my head. :vp

Somebody commissioned the R/WB-57 and wanted it in 1:48, so I had to take extreme measures to get it there. When you commission a model, you also get to pick the scale it comes out at.

When somebody is not commissioning to a specific scale, I just scale it so the biggest single part fits on the page without having to split the wings (I don't like doing horizontal splits in the wing, because they don't form as easily)
