That is clearly the airplane Murph and, wait for it - it flew out of Allegheny Airport in Pittsburgh. It was written off in an emergency landing when the engines failed in 1935 with no one injured. It could have been the airplane my parents flew in.
Crash of a Stinson Model A in Pittsburgh | Bureau of Aircraft Accidents Archives Incident Stinson Model A NC15107, 16 Nov 1935 As I recall from my parents' recollections, they used to hang out at a place called Bill Green's, a nightclub/roadhouse next to the airport, and from time to time would take sightseeing hops. Dad didn't know the model number, but he described flying in a "three-engine Stinson with a funny windshield." The airline would have been called Central Airlines at the time (later Pennsylvania-Central Airlines). More here on Central Airlines: Taking Flight! Pittsburgh's Gateway to the Skies - Pennsylvania Heritage Magazine It looks like Central's Model A's were blue with red trim, just saying in case anybody wants to replicate that livery in a model. Keep 'em flying! Don Last edited by Don Boose; 01-30-2023 at 08:42 AM. |

NC-14141 in white? or cream? and red? livery is a good-looking airplane. According to Joseph Juptner, it was originally NX-14141 (Stinson C/N 9100) and was the Model A prototype (US Civil Aircraft, Vol. 6, Aero Publishers 1974, extract on Stinson Model A available at chrome-extension://efaidnbmnnnibpcajpcglclefindmkaj/http://www.goldenwingsmuseum.com/collection/Aircraft%20Info%20Sheets/Stinson%206000-A.pdf).
It later flew with American Airlines in their dark blue and orange livery (Chicago Municipal Airport - American Airlines - Stinson Mo… | Flickr) and was written off in a crash in 1936 (Incident Stinson Model A NC14141, 26 May 1936). A Model A (NC 15165) that once flew for Pennsylvania-Central Airlines is being (or has been) restored: Stinson Model A: Restoring a Classic Aircraft – Disciples of Flight The prototype, one of the Central Air Lines aircraft, and one in the American Airlines livery would make a nice bundle (and, as Murph pointed out in his original post on this theme, the Model A also flew in Australia with Airlines of Australia and Australia National Airways and in India with Tata Airline): Stinson Model A - Wikipedia. A recent question asking about the availability of my old Bell XF-109 model got me looking at the model again. I tried a refresh last year, but it failed...miserably. So I set out for a redesign.
Welp... Gotta do some final cleanup, and build the XF3L-1 This is an entirely new model, with reworked engines, formers, and improved graphics. |

The plastic model version just sold on FaceBook Scale Model Graveyard for $55. Keeps reminding me what a great value Murph's Models are.
