Is that the oil tender that is used by Big Boy 4014?

It's the coal tender.

Side note. The oil tender that 4014 is currently using originally belonged to Challenger 3985.

While I wait for my brain to work out the engineering of the Big Boy, I thought I'd work on another locomotive.

The Stephenson Rocket, listed as the first steam locomotive.

Even in O-gauge it's gonna be small, compared to the DD-40X

Awesome. Wanted to build Rocket and even contemplated trying to design it. There is a replica in the National Railway Museum which has a cutaway of the boiler. However it certainly wasn't the first steam locomotive, there were many earlier ones such as Locomotion, Puffing Billy and the Trevithick Colebrookdale. Rocket is famous for winning the Rainhill Trials.

Your Rocket reminds me of the Strombecker simple wooden early (B&O Tom Thumb, e.g.) locomotives I built in the early 50s. Still have some unbuilt ones in the basement.

Working on a test build of the Rocket. It's tiny in O gauge.

Recreating the DD40X comparison.

This one's gonna have to come in 2 scales. O gauge is too fiddly for my 10 thumbs. What's another common large scale? I'm thinking G, but that seems to vary from 1/32 to 1/18

Gauge 1 might be a good option, it's 1:32. There are also paper models of railway vehicles in 1:24. Given the small size of the prototype, I don't think there will be any problem with this model being too large to appeal to the general builder nor fitting parts on sheets. You could consider making a Liverpool and Manchester Railway carriage too, since they were essentially stagecoaches mounted on two axle trucks.

I increased the Rocket to 1:24ish. It definitely is easier to build. I just need to find pics of the controls.
