Mostly I'm looking for plans of all the different locomotives I want to do.

Recently, I was browsing the Internet and stumbled across the "Promontory Locomotive Project" which was the National Park Service's plan to recreate the Golden Spike ceremony by building replicas of the 2 locomotives (UP 119 and CPs Jupiter) to display on scene. They have detailed plans of both locomotives on their website. 1700 pages detailing every part from the boiler down to the bell bracket. If you had access to lots of metal, a machine shop, and gobs of money, you could build your own 4-4-0 locomotive with these plans. Right now I'm browsing through the plans looking for major components to design 1/24 models of both locos. Unfortunately my computer has a heart attack every time I try and open the PDF in Photoshop to pull the drawings I need. This should be fun.

Well Aaron, at least your computer has a heart, most of them don't, or a soul! Seriously, I'd love to see a Civil War era American 4-4-0. One of the Promontory engines would be especially welcome.

I'm working on it. I'm trying to find the balance between "not enough detail" and "how do they expect me to build this?"

One thing you could do is provide two models: a simple one for those that just want to build a loco to display, and a complex one with underframe/valve gear and cab detail to satiate the detail nuts (like me)

I am looking forward to seeing what other locomotives you model. If I had more space, I'd have built that DD40 by now

This is what I'm shooting for:

Running gear

Full loco

I still need to add panel lines and finish up the piping and accessories. And draw up the tender.

I'm keeping my fingers cross that you do both version of the 440 trains.
Will you do tracks to display these models on?
Can't wait for these to come available. THANKS.

I've got it on paper. I've built the tender and started on the frame of the loco. I figure together we're looking at 18 inches combined. I designed something that looks like valve gear, if you don't pay too close attention to it.

Right now I'm figuring out how exactly it's supposed to go together and in what sequence.

I do plan on including track, though I'm limited to 12 inch sections, so it'll have to be glued to a flat surface. If I like how it turns out, I may break out some long unused model railroading landscaping skills and add scenery.

Progress so far. I'm not liking how the pilot turned out, plus I found better pictures, so that's going in for redesign.

Upcoming models

Hello Murphyaa

I am overjoyed that you are designing these locomotives, I have loved the 4-4-0 Woodburner style since I was a kid to me nothing comes close to their grace and beauty. You are making a Superb so far, Thank You!

Sincerely

Tom
