The L-5 model was very popular, Ryan, and the AHEC staffers especially liked the historical information that came with it.
AHEC usually video tapes the lectures. It's possible that Colonel Mastriano's Sergeant York lecture will be available from the AHEC site. Don |

44th Bomb Group Commemoration
Kevin Stephens’s entry in the Fiddlers Green contest was a B-24D. http://www.papermodelers.com/forum/improved-stock/7348-fgmm-b-24-princess.html
Specifically, he built B-24D-10-CF, “Princess,” serial 42-63962, which was an aircraft of the 506th Bomb Squadron, 44th Bomb Group, flying out of Shipdham, England, except for temporary duty from June to November 1943, when they were transferred to North Africa to participate in the Ploesti missions. Kevin brought that model to display on Army Heritage Day. We knew that the 44th Bomb Group had a connection to AHEC: they donated their archives to the Military History Institute and have many commemorative bricks in the AHEC entrance walkway. http://www.44thbombgroup.com/index.html What we did not know was that today, a monument commemorating the 44th BG was to be dedicated at the AHEC Memorial Garden. This was a unique opportunity. Kevin proposed that all the veterans of the 44th who attended the dedication sign the airplane, which would then be permanently displayed at AHEC. We had a wonderful time meeting these World War II heroes, many of them highly decorated. Below are photographs of seven of the nine signers: Chris Spagnola, pilot, 67th Bomb Squadron. Perry Morse, tail gunner, 506th Bomb Squadron. (No photo.) Jay Steele, 68th Bomb Squadron. George Washburn, copilot (16 missions) and pilot, 68th Bomb Squadron. William Croft, waist gunner, 68th Bomb Squadron and native of Carlisle, PA. Robert (Lee) Ashton, Navigator, 67th Bomb Squadron. John Clark, copilot, 67th Bomb Squadron. Bob Swegel, tail gunner of “One Weakness,” 68th Bomb Squadron. Jerry Folsom, copilot, 506th Bomb Squadron. (No photo. He and Perry Morse were in the same crew.) In the last photo, Colonel Mark Viney, Director of the Army Heritage and Education Center, accepts the airplane on behalf of the Center, where Princess will continue to fly forever, through clear skies with no flak or German fighters. |
