I believe that the Paddy Wagon on the Fiddler's Green site had a fairly simple mule model that could be used as a base idea for the 20 mule train.

Through Wayback Machine I found a rather 'mule-ish' looking horse that would be a happy medium between figure flat and complex model, but even though I found a pic in a links list (thumbnail) no pics or model was able to be retrieved. It reminded me of Olli's work. Body was four pieces laminated together with center two pieces having neck head and tail. Legs were 2-d with folds, which amazingly handled the hips fairly well. Maybe this description will generate some ideas, otherwise ignore.
I wonder if the simple horses from paperracepark could be modified ...

Ninjatoes Mule Model
Ninjatoes' papercraft has a model of a mule in the Legend of Zelda section. Click on the Zelda link and scroll down. Two page pdf with a separate instruction pdf. Looks like it would be easy enough to make twenty of them.

Dear List folks:
In the dark ages of renacting the 4th artillery Battery B from Denver Co was asked to put together a museum display of 12# Mtn. How.and having a pile of packsaddle and horse stuff just did not look right so the crew used plywood cutouts full size with slot and tab head and body in side view legs and shoulders in front and back view slotted and body slices where the packs and straps went Some place in the basement I might have a picture not sure I can find it we painted them brown and some clown make small square blocks and placed them behind one of the horses. In card stock one could use real picture of a series of mules so that the flats had some thing on them? Funny what you remember from the past when reading the posts. Also the full scale flats could come apart for transport and storage. Thanks, MILES I see 4 or 5 rigs dusted with Borax in a long row the length of the house |

Miles, if you can find photos, I would like to see them.
If I ever get around to this project idea...I would be very reluctant to include fully detailed models of twenty different Mules! That would put me off if I wanted to build this kit. I like the idea of a "ghost" figure for the Mules... something that physically represents a full size Mule, but much less detailed. Something simpler to build, that leaves the focus on the Wagon and Equipment. I agree, in this case, the Mules are very important in the sense that they have specialized training...but they're still just common Mules, and unlike the Wagon(s), they are in much greater supply.

I personally would like to see this at 1:50 or smaller. At that size 2d mules would be fine.

I was thinking 1/4 scale to be honest.
