Looking at the Canon Horse, I think the Zebra might be closer to start with for a mule.

I thought that was what you were referring to. At the Kansas City Zoo, they used to have a Dairy Barn in the back forty. They had a bunch of cows done like that. Real ones, too, but most were the 2.5d kind.
