Scot Reinmann
The next artist provided an exhibit as different from his peers as his subjects. Scot Reinmann apparently prefers real space models, and he is prolific in his building of them.
Scot was not available to be interviewed; a shame since his collection evoked so many questions. He is welcomed to comment and inform here about his kits and exhibits, as they were quite stunning; both is the quality of the build and the interest of the subject matter. Thanks for your comments regarding my small display. Just a correction. I don't own the Digital Navy site. That is Roman's site and he does attend the convention at times. However, my Peashooter is a Digital Navy kit back when it was sold in print, vs. download. Bob |

Ray Smith’s Exhibit
Ray Smith is a pleasant man who has as much talent as he has persistence. Ray’s exhibit was between Scot Reinman & Bob Delpizzo on the left side of the second room. Though we had little time to chat, at the 2022 IPMC, he left a positive impression upon me, both for the quality of his work, as for his interest in promoting and helping builders invest in papermodeling. He was kind enough to send me encouraging messages to get this Thread done, before the 2023 IPMC, and he was kind enough to send to me this morning some comments to coincide with my theme for this walk-thru; description, build tips, and convention investment.
Ray’s exhibit is full of exceptional work. His table was well-organized with place cards that identify the designer and scale of each model. The exhibition appears ready to be transported to appropriate museums; as informative as attractive. Ray, himself, is an Administrator on Papermodeler’s. He is eager to promote the craft and teach tips that promote building and success. Picture 1: Ray Smith stands ready to answer questions… Picture 2: Ray Smith’s exhibit… Picture 3: Ray Smith’s exhibit detailed many builds of many eras… Picture 4: Part dedicated to multiple era planes, each on its own custom built base… Picture 5: More builds of a variety of subjects…

Ray Smith’s Exhibit continued…
Ray’s builds all have somethings in common; clean, quality builds, effective signage that tells about the builds, and attractive displays. The variety of subjects made the table interesting too.
Accurate military planes sit next to science fiction craft, only inches from Easter Island stone figures or Hippy VWs see pic 6). His selection of builds include a variety of artists and publishers, but he also has repainted a number to achieve personalized builds… Picture 6: Fiction and history mix, with a new build being started in the back…

Ray Smith’s Exhibit continued more…
Ray Smith provides information about each kit in small placards, and he even shares the manufacturer/publisher of each kit. This is a valuable addition, as his detail permits spectators, interested in building the same kit, seeing at a glance whether they can seek out Canon, Fiddler’s Green, Roman, etc. to get a copy of their own…
The cards also suggest when he repainted kit that he got from a vendor or author. Now if he could only be persuaded to create a thread, on this forum, about how to repaint kits??? Picture 11: Smith’s detailed, small scale “Spotted Cow” Picture 12: The tiny, but detailed, Fokker Dr.1…

Ray Smith’s Exhibit continued even more…
Ray shared some build tips, via email. He shared that he preferred a thicker glue to easily obtained school glues, like Elmers. He explained that such white glues were often too watery, and as such, can cause warping to cardstock.
He also gave tips regarding edging (the process of coloring the cut edges of pieces so that the part, when joined, leaves no white lines from the severed edges). He displayed many kits with very clean joins; no warping or edging problems. Hs suggesting was to spend a little money to buy quality pens to color the edges of cut parts in since with the colors of the part being joined. He uses Faber Castle artist pens for his edging. He explained that they do not bleed as much as less quality pens, distorting the part edges. He noted that lesser, water-based pens provide less consistent results. The results are impressive. He also suggested that when trying to curve a part, use a cotton swap, to place a small amount of alcohol on the opposite side of the part being curved. He explained that the alcohol doesn’t cause ink to bleed, like water does,, yet the alcohol does soften the fibers of the cardstock enough to support flexibility in the part. Not only does this permit the part to bend more smoothly, the loosening of the fibers helps eliminate creases during the fold. He also offers a good tip for beginners. He suggests removing any glue tabs associated with the kit, as joining the kit without them makes for a smoother joining of the parts. Without the tabs, gaps and shifts between the parts is less likely, even if the tabs do make the assembly easier (if not better in look).
