Matthew Tractor Jefson’s Later Exhibit
Jefson‘s massive exhibit continued past the central, back panel table. Three large and detailed builds of John Deere equipment dwarfed a tiny simple paper model tractor, positioned at the front of the table (see picture 1). More detail about these three builds will be explored later, but take a moment to consider the effort that he expended and achieved with the big three in this photo. The steps leading to the cab in the first build, as well as the tire tread detail, different on the front and rear tires, and the detailed cab area, enclosed in a clear material to represent a windscreen. It’s an amazing build.
Yet as impressive as it is, the effort and success of the second build is clear when considering the well crafter rounded curves of the front bladed structure, the very detailed interior, and the detail of the tire tread, railing, and even a fire extinguisher. It’s quite a work of farm-art. This large vehicle is a master stroke. The third large build continues the progression of accuracy and craft. Peer into the clear-screened cab to see the seat, controls and steering wheel. The tractor-pulled implement has a carefully crafted ladder permitting inspection, and access to the chute. Even the box at the front is carefully built to accuracy and visual appeal. The display cases that follow past these three large builds, would take a few chapters to effectively describe. There is so much in these later cases (see picture 2). The detail and variety of farm implements that the tractor’s would pull, is extensive and carefully executed. Just take a minute to examine the collection in the top, right case. The next few cases continue this trend of specialized, detailed builds. A few simple, hand colored builds occupy a case towards the rear (see picture 3), while the one that was displayed in front of these, depict extremely detailed trailers, pulled by crafter tractors (see picture 4). Take note of the beds of these trailers. Three more carefully built tractors sit aside each other, their implement lifted behind them (see picture 5). These not only display the sharp, realistic tool ends, but even the segmented joints of the racks. If you are thinking that Jefson‘s massive exhibit could be a separate IPMC, you are probably right. There is such a large number of builds, and so much history of farm equipment of varying types, you could spend hours perusing his work for both technique appreciation and subject selection. By the end of the third table of his exhibit, you will have had a historic tour of the John Deere brand, as well as a wide selection of finely designed and crafted kits; items not found elsewhere.
The last collection of containers, along the back row, depict five layers of display cases, each with a different series of tractors and implements (see picture 1). This collection of sprayers, tillers, etc. are all accurately designed and meticulously rendered in paper. Other display cases depict specific previous events-displays. One from the 32nd Maryland show illustrates the great care in crafting these tiny farm tools (see picture 2). Notice, that even at this small scale, the tires were carefully treaded properly. The seats to these vehicles were properly built to reflect the technology of the time. If you look closely at this photo, you can make out exhaust hoses, manifolds, and even the grills of the radiators. Another case located on the third table was titled the 2023 Classic Green Reunion (see picture 3). Again, the uncompromising care toward accuracy of the built and skill in technique prompts that age-old question “Is that paper?” It is. Another case, near the last, displays several tractors with optional equipment; pull-behind bins and front-mounting catchers (picture 4). A last case displays a large collection, stuffed into these few containers, of seeders, bins, and more, crowding the plastic display box with detail and demonstrated mastery of build techniques (picture 5). Matthew Tractor Jefson’s Designing
Jefson‘s efforts begin in the design phase, as described on the display boards, several chapter back. He crafts the pieces of his kits on a PC, using AutoCAD software (see picture 1). He hails from Warranton, VA. and has developed a mobile system; brought a work table along to work on a project while at the IPMC. For the IPMC, he hid his design lab behind his 3-panel display, but he was open to sharing his secrets when prompted.
To get the parts accurate in design and scale to each other, he uses the John Deere website to compare the design pics to his CAD designs, to ensure correlation. Sometimes the item that he is developing is too old for a catalogue. In those cases, he references old photos, or when possible, an actual machine to go photograph, to get images to guide the later design. He noted that a lot of the interior details are not readily available, requiring some detective work. He also shared that the effort to framing f the vehicle or item, as it is all purposeful in farm equipment. In the process of studying the framing, he finds himself reinforcing the build frame for strength and durability. He noted that, even when detective work is needed, he tried to find John Deere materials, even if from older catalogues. Jefson explained that the catalogues have such detail and accuracy that they even provide the part numbers of the bolts in a particular part of the vehicle (see picture 2). Matthew Tractor Jefson’s Exhibit (Detailed Building)
Jefson‘s designing efforts reach fruition during his builds. Different builds feature different levels and quality of detail. In one build, a large Deere tractor (placed near the center of the exhibit), illustrates the complexity of the rigging on the implement, behind the tractor, is as remarkable as the effort put into the cab and controls of the tractor itself (see picture 1).
Similarly, the tire tread, made of paper and laminated layers of painted paper, in the next build is also rivaled by the cab details, behind a carefully bent clear screen (see picture 2). Matthew Tractor Jefson’s Exhibit (Detailed Building Continued)
Jefson‘s designing efforts further reach accomplishment in his large builds of Deere equipment. Despite their large size, these are made of paper and cardboard (see picture 1).
The harvester that he built looms largely in front of its creator, who is sitting in the background, behind the table (see picture 2). Notice the curved blades, the fine handrail detailing, and the tracking detail (not just relying upon graphic representation). A side view illustrates the tire tread, the piping, and the catwalk tread detail; the funnel, piping, and even rear lights (see picture 3). A second exterior shot, from above, permits you to look down into the funnel and examine the parts as they would appear in the full sized, real vehicle (see picture 4). Another build that shows the union of design and quality build, was his yellow tractor (see picture 1). Notice the exhaust pies, the crafter interior control levels, and again, the laminated tire tread. Even the engine compartment details and steering linkage is well executed.
Similarly, a red International tractor sits next to a towing implement in a display case (see picture 2). Notice the laminated tire tread and the steering linkage. The next image offers a view of the inner engine well, with the starter and other engine components detailed out (see picture 3). Another cabinet protected build is of another harvester (much smaller) that illustrates carefully folded, rounded blades, and various railings that would be found on one (see picture 1). A different Harvester shows carefully detailed implement choices; either for corn or with drapers (see picture 2).
Notice the care taken in the design of the complicated rake and the execution of the build, conveying the fine workmanship of the design, and with details as accurate as a caution sign mounted atop (see picture 3). Another complicated design made for a fine build in the hands of Jefson (see picture 4).
