If you need some inspiration to get this model, and you have a "netflix" account, you can get a DVD from the science channel titled "The Hunt for the USS Alligator". I just watched it, and it has a nice model (1/12 scale) of the Alligator along with some quick shots of a nice set of cut-away plans. Spoiler alert, they don't find the actual sub. It does a good job showing how the original paddles worked.
