Sigh....too bad DGA doesn't have room in their busy schedule for a Devastator...heavy sigh.

The 8-T-7 designation on the side indicates that this plane flew off the Hornet, that's my research...not necessarily right. We visited the Hornet in Oakland a few years ago and that made this build kind of special.

My flight deck is getting crowded so the folded wings will save a little space and since the TBD was the first plane with hydraulically folding wings this was an appropriate depiction, again, my research and not necessarily right.
I went thru the whole build off and I agree that there was some outstanding builds, but I was blown away with this one. This is one of the best MM kits that from a old kit I have seen done. The work it took for the canopy alone is staggering. Just wanted to say, Well Done. I bet that setting on a Carrier flight deck in scale would set it off for a display piece.

Here's a few pics, the assembly went fairly well, the unprinted area around the wing fillets extended out past the wing fillets and quite a bit of touchup was required there.
And, of course, typical of the early Malys, the cockpit leaves much to be desired in detail.
Oohh! That's pretty. I've always had a place for the TBD. BTW, where in TX are you headed?

Ryan,

You should have asked, where in TX were you headed

that was posted almost a year ago

I know that this is old now... (See above) but thought I'd add a few more items to the thread.

First, I've also been to the Hornet in Oakland, but this aircraft is not from the same ship. It is from the squadron that flew off of the original USS Hornet aircraft carrier, CV-8 which was the ship the Doolittle Raiders flew off of (I'm pretty sure some of the Raiders bunked with VT-8) and also the ship that lost almost all of Torpedo Squadron 8 at Midway.

Also attached are some photos of the aircraft depicted! If you look at the first link below you'll find some information about the particular aircraft.

A few good links:
Douglas TBD Devastator list by Lynn Ritger
TBD Devastator Units of the US Navy - Google Book Search
U.S. Navy Dive and Torpedo Bombers ... - Google Book Search

The scans below are from the TBD Devastator in action by Squadron Signal. The profile is the aircraft's previous identity, and the photo is of the aircraft at NAS Norfolk before embarking on the USS Hornet.

Ryan the tardy!

I am sorry if I caused some confusion by posting to this thread. I knew it was old, but wanted to let the individual I appreciated the work and it happens to be a favorite aircraft of mine let alone the history of Midway. I was just giving the fella some props.:(
