I guess you caused me some confusion, but quite happy confusion :D I hadn't seen this thread before and the TBD is also one of my favorite planes and this build is great. Thanks for bringing it back!

I was glad to see this thread revived. Tbolter's TBD was a beautiful model and I was glad to be reminded of it and to look at the photos again.

This is another aircraft that deserves the attention of a computer aided designer. Can you imagine a Halinski Devastator with the same detailing as their Dauntless?!?

Excellent model. Impressive work on the canopy.
Talking about the battle of Midway, if you want to watch a very simple but moving short the Navy produced on Torpedo Sqn 8, go to this link at You Tube: YouTube - Torpedo Squadron 8 We can never honor those guys enough.

Just watched the Roland Emmerich "Midway" last night. Yeah low and slow was the way they did it because "Bombs don't sink ships, torpedoes sink ships". Well as we know that cost them dearly.
I was a little surprised that they portrayed a SBD-3 trying to out climb a Zero in the Marshall islands bit, seems like a really dumb idea, clouds or not. I remember in Pappy Boyington's "Baa Baa Black Sheep" He said the P-40 could out dive Zeros but dont try to turn or climb with them. Yup, Zeros were nimble. Also the chunk of armor behind the pilot's seat came in handy a time or two. Anyhoo It did make for an exciting movie and using cgi allowed the ships and planes to be mostly correct unlike the "Pearl Harbor" movie with Ben Afleck. I think it was the row of de-commisioned frigates with their sharp bows that broke the magic for me. Cheers Keep on a-building, we need to put our "cards on the table" David aka Formerly Styrene |
