Magnificant Walking Machine

I'm still looking for the perfect card automata and I think I've come close!

I found this in a shop Brighton. The guy in the shop said that because it's a no glue needed kit it didn't work too well. So, I glued most of the parts and it seems to be OK despite a bit of use.

The main part of the mechanism is made from 2mm card and is die cut. I cleaned up the edges and used a candle on the moving parts.

The problem with automata is that the more bits that are added create more friction, this is no different, but the thick card helps.

The figure is made of lighter card but is still too thick to enable a good bending into a tube.

One of the annoying things is the instructions, they are printed on one big sheet but the folds don't match up with the separate sections. They must be read very carefully because both sides look the same, except they are right and left handed. I started with the wrong side so had to dismantle some of the early steps.

The shop has a lot of interesting stuff

The parts fit together well and the graphics are "interesting", so it was an enjoyable build --- and it still works!

Cheers

Mike

Love the 'interesting' graphics. The busy-ness of the graphics make it appear complicated which I guess is part of its appeal. Thanks for the report. I'm intrigued.

That is such an interesting model on many levels. Thanks for the share. Will there be a video?

I found this on youtube.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0XXxa1Zoup4

It's a long video showing how it's made. It differs in some places from the "real life" build.

Cheers
Mike
