Vertical Steam Engine
This is the work of Ed Bertschy. I get the impression from the instructions that Ed is more an engineer and less of a kit designer. The instructions uses a lot engineering language that is completely unintelligible to someone like me who spent most of his working days pushing a pen. The kit also comes with an impressive amount of detail. Ed intimates that it should work using air! This seems possible because the steam valves on the side of the cylinder move also all the other bits that move on the real thing work on the model.
Like many of my downloaded kits, I reduce the size. I found that this was not a good idea. Mainly because the instructions call for the connecting rods and other bits to be cut to a certain size. Also I found that just following the number order was not always the best thing. It meant that I had to refer to the written instructions which wasn't always easy because it was written in engineering - not pen pusher! The completed engine is 7 inches tall and the red fly wheel has a 4 inch diameter. This all sounds a bit negative but I enjoyed making it and seeing all the moving bits move when I turned the fly wheel was very satisfying! Cheers Mike |

Looks really beautiful and your description sounds intriguing too!
I see the scaled down worm screw is a difficult thing to be recreated. Maybe it will be better to roll double wide strip (cut along in halves and laid flat on the desk) around the rod and then remove one of halves in order to secure the constant width of a gap (thread pitch)?

Excellent job Mike - I've been tempted to try that one myself but so many small parts! As for it running on air, I seem to remember watching a video of the original size model doing exactly that.
And Viator - a brilliant idea for building the worm drive - simple but very effective. |
