Now I'd always wondered how Thunderbird 2 managed to fly ... according to this concept .... you just make it almost lighter than air with helium. Brilliant concept. If Zeppelin had thought of that instead of hydrogen, the airship industry would still be thriving today. Not obvious in the film quite where they are storing the helium balloons though.
Now don't get me wrong here. I love the concept of airships and blimps, but with the reputation damage done by the R-101 and the Hindenburg, I doubt that I'll live long enough to see them become commercially viable again. Even the military are still fighting shy of the concept.

The hardest part to believe is all the empty interior space. From the beginning of human transportation, owners/operators of carts, boats, ships, trains, trucks, aircraft, and spacecraft have needed to make use of every cubic foot. Even if propulsion costs were almost free, costs of construction would maintain this tradition. So if designers eliminated as much of this extra space as possible, they could reduce the external dimensions, significantly reducing costs, and that's what I would expect to happen.

Another thing that makes Thunderbird 2 fly is antigravity. You see it used a lot in the show, from some of the cars and trucks, to the remote camera used in the Pit of Peril episode (and the Sidewinder was retrofitted with antigravity to prevent that from happening again). Even in the Thunderbird Six movie, the giant airship Brains designed was held up by antigravity.

no...really... its just strings.
They didn't have anti-gravity in the sixties. They didn't even have anti-knock gasoline yet.

Yup, Antigravity sussed for model photography ... Monofilament fishing line and a helium balloon with adjustable weights.
Or even simpler ... 'ang it from the ceiling!
