Edo Period Tour Guides
Meisho (名所, lit. 'famous places')
Meisho - Wikipedia Tour guides for the developing merchant and artisanal classes of the Edo period. These books contain descriptions and pictures of places of interest for the early Japanese tourist or traveling business man. The pictures are a record of a way of life that began to disappear in the late 1800's. Open a link, click on a book and take a tour into the past, and see country back roads and busy streets filled with merchants, shoppers, samurai, and occasionally people causing trouble. https://archive.wul.waseda.ac.jp/kosho/ru04/ru04_00409/ https://archive.wul.waseda.ac.jp/kosho/ru04/ru04_03218/ https://archive.wul.waseda.ac.jp/kosho/ru04/ru04_03605/ https://archive.wul.waseda.ac.jp/kosho/ru04/ru04_05105/ Excerpts from old guide books https://web.archive.org/web/20071016...zue/mokuji.htm Last edited by John Wagenseil; 08-06-2023 at 01:12 PM. |
