I can travel about fifty miles north of here and see Eastern Kingbirds. It's about the westernmost they get, I think. The first time I saw one, I was driving to Portland and a strange bird flew across the road as I was leaving the town of Warm Springs. It landed on a low hanging tree branch on the side of the road. As I drove by, I was surprised to see what I thought was an Eastern Kingbird...which is what it turned out to be. Oh...I almost wrecked the car checking it out. Never drive and bird at the same time 8v)

That's a very pretty bird. I have often seen them at Cape May, but not on the last trip.

Living in the Sierra Nevada foothills, and before that in the redwoods of Humboldt County, I've seen many kinds of birds. Some I know well, and some I only know as LBB's (little brown birds), but my all-time favorite is the varied thrush. I will never forget hearing its haunting call wafting through fog-shrouded groves of redwoods.
Cheers!

That is a wonderful description, one who knows that call/song can easily imagine the feeling of a natural cathedral in the shadow of those trees on a quiet day. Of course thrushes are legendary for the ability to turn a wood into a place of wonder, Wood thrushes in the East!, Veerys after a rain, and Swainson's thrushes in the west. Varied's spend the winter here actually summer too but at extreme elevations, and continue to call through the winter, wondrous multiple pitched harmonic whistles. Each true to the note it was started on. Even the song of our American robin from a treetop on a spring evening. Interestingly Robins do sing in the winter sometimes in a soft whispery voice, like humming, and many bleak winter day has been transformed into the hope of spring by the sound of this coming from a leafless tree with a huddled up robin sitting there.

I remember seeing some very bright blue colored birds in the backyard one year. Turned out to be indigo buntings. Very intense blue.
I had a bunch of pine siskins hopping all over me one time. The bird feeder was empty so I decided to sit in a chair close to the feeder with some bird seed in my hand. Sure enough a bunch of them started landing on me and eating out of my hand. It lasted until I sneezed. It was funny how some of the birds would peck at the seed in my hand then look up at my face, then repeat that many times.

Hey Ashrunner, that's a great photo. Really like the way the limbs frame the bird and emphasis the overall thurst of the bird's 'pose'. Ain't it grand when things work!

Thanks.
I was able to get three shots before the bird bolted and was really pleased with the way the shot came out. I knew when the bird looked to his right, that the photo would be nice if the dirty storm window didn't screw it up.
