Can you create paper models out of "Orbiter"-Models ?
Last time I build some paper space model, I sat in front of the PC and...
saw my small icon of Martin Schweiger's free "Orbiter", the 2010 version from August. And while I was trying to dock the "Venture Star" to the ISS, fly around in the ESA Hermes Shuttle or tried to land with one of the 2001 models (aries 1B etc, Uhu you are the greatest) I was thinking how cool it could be to convert these simulation models to paper models. As I am an absolut beginner I was thinking how to convert the Orbiter files (meshes as .msh and textures as .dds or .bmp) into "usable" files like .3ds or .obj for e.g. Pepakura. Does anyone know a way how to do this? And please apologize if this is topic is not fitting into the "PASA" section. The free fantastic Orbiter space simulation is available at Orbiter - Home :D:D:D |

A while ago, Merzo sent me a link with programs that I think can convert 3d into flat structures. perhaps this is something you can work with. (I have a Macbook and these programs are windows-based...)

The problem with the Orbiter models is that they are so simplified that they wouldn't make very nice paper models, I don't think. I toyed with the concept but rejected it for that reason and because I couldn't find a way to convert the models.

Don't know how many orbiters you want, but you can get the PanAm Orion, Venture Star, and X-37 over at Lower Hudson Valley. Canon has a lifting body shape (ISS emergency crew return vehicle concept) as well. You might find a few more at Paper Hollywood.

There's a program called Ultimate Unwrap that can open Orbiter .msh files. From there, you can convert them to .OBJ, or some other format.

Many, many thanks for your replies and explanations!
They are very much appreciated indeed. -the 3d conversion program is something I will keep in mind, it might be very useful indeed. -Also many thanks for the hint with the relative low resoluiton textures. I never checked these out and in the simulation they look breathtaking. Maybe in the future with more high performance PC "power", the texture resolution will also increase. Who knows... At least I know that I was not the only one toying with the idea. -Also many thanks for the hint with the "Lower Hudson Valley". It's one of my favorites:D:D:D along with Leo's website.:D:D:D. I somehow stopped retexturing of the X-33 there. Again: Many thanks for your input and as always: any comment is welcome. :D:D:D:D:D:D |

Some orbiter models have high-resolution textures (Although I think the highest is 2048 x 2048). You can use a free program called Irfanview (Be sure to download the plugin pack too) to open Oribter textures and look at their resolution/save them in a different format.

Thanks for the hint about the high resolution. I knew somehow that I was not the first to think about this....
Looking for some Orbiter add-ons I found a hint at the marvelous AMX shuttle homepage Paper Shuttle Model As I checked further for the keyword "paper" I also found paper models for the Simulated Delta Glider (I wonder if this still fits in the PASA section): Red Delta Glider Paper Model (Red Colored Version) Delta Glider Paper Model Great if two hobby groups inspire each other |

UMC2 in the download section can open the orbiter .msh files and convert them to .mqo files.
