Space related video-Thor launches
I went off on a bit of a tangent this week, diverging from my planned route I started on a couple space related builds and a new kit (please indulge me my Thor obsession-once you have the basic Thor booster, new versions are literally a few hours of work. One semi-new page of parts, new instruction page, new cover and BAM! brand new kit )
In any case, in the process of doing some research I ran across this video. The first three launches are Thor-Agena As, but the really neat part comes about 16 minutes in. There's an extended shot of a Thor-Able, on the pad with the service tower in palce, with the service tower being retracted, and finally of the launch. I thought it was really cool, I honestly don't know if it interests anyone here, but I thought it was worth mentioning. The Thor-Agena launches are cool, too. I always like to watch that antique pioneering NASA footage. It gives me a sense of nostalgia, even though I am from 1970. The way people in those days did their best and tried - and kept trying - until they succeeded, it kind of had this feeling that almost anything was possible, or at least worth trying. Nowadays, no one would dream an engine up like the F-1. There won't even be funding for such a project. That's a typical example of that era.
Those launch movies are a beautiful window to that early period of space exploration. Thanks for sharing. |

You're quite welcome. I agree with you on the nostalgia. It was such a fascinating time, with so much rapid innovation. I wish that science was treated now with the reverence that it was treated then. It seems to have lost so much value in our society. Innovation is what big companies do for money, not what governments do for the sake of doing it.
