Here are some pictures of the final Aft Compartment. Eventually, there will be alot going on here. But for now, here is the shell. Took me 2 full days, because I had to design all of the junk that attaches to the outside; to make sure that I only had to build this once.
Note that the stringers on the upper crew compartment line up with the marks on the aft compartment. This is how you will align it when removing the crew compartment for displaying the inside. More to follow... Ken

I'm glad you are enjoying it!
Here is the start of an exercise in repetition... the lower outriggers. Each outrigger is made from 4 parts... times by 24 !! 1 done; 23 to go. Ken

12 of the outriggers are finished and attached.
4 of them are 3 times as thick as the others as shown in the pictures below. I am not exactly sure why, but I suspect it is because the capsule is expected to hit the water in this area, and extra structure was required. Ken

1/12 Scale Apollo CM Model by Ken L. West
Fantastic, Ken,
You are a paper model Wizard! It is intriguing to follow this thread, and at the same time to learn more about the intricacies of technical engineering of the inner structures of the complicated Apollo Command Module spacecraft. Wave your magic wand some more... All the best, Bengt in Stockholm |

Bengt,
I haven't heard from you in awhile... glad you are watching! Not too much to show tonight... BUT, I did finish the outer ring reinforcements...whew! That was a task. The last picture shows that we mean business, however, this is gonna get much busier very quickly! There seems to be an interest in knowing what the various components are called and understanding their purpose, so I will do my best to describe them as I go. Starting now: What you see in the last picture is the Pressure Vessel. Also called the Crew Compartment. The upper cone shape is called the Forward Compartment, and the pan-shaped lower half is called the Aft Compartment. There are 2 ways in and 2 ways out: The Docking Tunnel, and the Hatch. Stay tuned... Ken

Let's Roll!
There are 4 roll thrusters on the CM. 2 for clockwise, and 2 for counter-clockwise. Each side of the CM has one of each, and work in tandem. Ken
