OK, I'm salivating!
Interesting that you use the heat gun on Aleene's. I've found the "Ouick Dry" formula sets up almost immediately (i.e., ~ 10 sec.). I use the regular type when I need longer to make sure of parts alignment. Les (The Voice of Authority) |

If Ken says he's starting on the S-IVB, I'm going to faint....
Seriously stunning work so far. |

S-IVB - Heck! Can you imagine what Ken would do with the Service Module? With opened experiment bays? Think of Apollo 13 . . .

In the case of Apollo 13.The service module was not open by choice. Now Apollo`s 15 thru 17,they each had the SIM bay.Heck lets go for the gusto and think of a LM in 1/12 th scale. Now that would be off the chart.

Here is what is in store for the weekend: I'm really looking forward to seeing this sitting on a shelf with a light shining up on it! At 39 inches (1 meter) tall, it will be the centerpiece of my workshop.

It's Friday night, and I have a good start on the Escape Tower. It's nowhere near ready to mount to the BPC, but I sat it in place to snap a few photos; just to get an idea....

What's the diameter of those small tubes? How you rolling them? Material = cardstock or paper? Mike |

Hi Mike,
There are 2 sizes of tubing for the tower; .25 in and .187 in. It turns out that these standard sizes are very close to the actual diameters, so I "slightly" and "imperceptibly" (if that's a word) changed the scale. There are 2 reasons for this: 1) a builder can easily convert to wooden dowel, and 2) provides a good armature for rolling. As to the paper, I am using 110 lb cardstock, but after rolling these, and seeing all the crumples, it would be better to use standard bond paper. Being a tubular rocket man yourself, you already know that rolled paper, even thin paper, is plenty strong. But I am waiting to see how heavy the escape rocket is before deciding the final thickness to use for the paper. Ken

Progress Report:
Based on Mike's questions concerning the material/diameter of the tubes, I decided to try regular bond paper for all of the internal struts. Obviously much easier to roll and glue, but very easy to crush or damage. (think cigarettes) But as far as structural integrity goes, regular paper will work fine for the internal tubing. But the 4 vertical legs will probably have to remain 110 pound paper. Here are some pictures that show where I am at this point. I won't be re-building this, but there will be improvements for the final design. Rotating seam lines to the back, and tweaks to the placement markings. I have to mow the lawn this afternoon... currently, my wife is in Germany, but I can still feel the heat breathing down my neck. But I'll be back. Ken
