1/30 Magellan
Gang,
Hot off the workbench! My build of the SCIkits 1/30 Magellan spacecraft that sent back radar images of Venus' cloud-shrouded surface from 1990 to 1994. The model is a patchwork of materials. The main body and solar panels (card) and high gain antenna (styrofoam) are kit parts. The rectangular altimeter shroud is a cardstock part enlarged from Yogi's 1/48 Magellan. The thruster supports and HGA antenna details are plastic rod. The thrusters themselves are extras from a resin 1/48 LM detail set. I used plastic sheet, resin, thread and wire for other bits. Comments welcome. On to the DC-X! Les (The Voice of Authority -- VoiceofAuthority.net - The Voice Stylings of Les Dorr, Jr.) |

How did you like the SCIKit? I've looked at them before, but haven't ordered any yet.

I also have a half-built Mars Global Surveyor. That kit is a bit better detailed, but it doesn't have the Mylar covering for the tanks and instruments represented. The propellants tanks, if you want to show them, are 2-D pieces that fit together in a cross pattern. I see these kits as a canvas on which to "paint" much more detail. Nice build. I built a Voyager several years ago from SCIKit. The basic ideas where there, but it was pretty simplified.
But Les it right, if you treat it like a canvas to improve upon, you'll end up with a very nice model.
