Hey guys
My apologies once again for the lack of updates on this thread, but rest assured I’m making progress on this... and speaking of progress, here are the two finished ones: the S-1 and P-1 Trusses just like the S-0 Truss, these two mirror pairs show the soundness of sir Alfonso’s design... all solid constructions, yet really easy to add detail... research and reference crosschecking took much of the build time (primarily to visualize what and where these detail parts have to be glued... since the S-1 and P-1 Trusses are basically mirror pairs of each other, they share almost identical build methods, except for some small details unique to each Truss segment here’s S-1 to start off |

and next up is P-1
unlike S-1, I was able to finish this truss in a shorter amount of time, mainly because I didn’t need to do much reference crosschecking because I already did that with the other, and they both shared the same detail additions, alongside generic details like EZ lines for wiring/cabling, and gold-colored wire for the EVA handrails Last edited by Hans Christian; 11-22-2020 at 12:07 PM. |

and for the detail enhancements I added, here’s the complete list based on the NASA EVA checklists and reference photos I managed to get online:
1. I discovered that both truss have 2 pairs of additional internal support beams, the first pair is found bolted on the inboard truss wall (where they are bolted onto the S-0 truss) on one end, and their other ends bolted onto one of the interior beams that supports the Ammonia Tank Assembly... the second pair is found bolted on one end to the truss bulkhead where the Flex Hose Rotary Adapter / Thermal Radiator Rotary Joint is mounted, and their other end bolted onto yet another interior truss beam, almost adjacent to the truss long beams I used appropriately-sized plastic rod (painted flat aluminum) to simulate the support beams, although you can use a rolled up piece of paper as a direct subsitute 2. I used some metal wire to simulate the metallic hosings for the Pump Module. then after closing the truss up, I glued a rectangular piece of quilted paper to cover it up, simulating the thermal cloth cover that I found via flyaround photos take note however that this detail piece can be omitted because once the truss is finished up, its almost completely hidden from view, but I chose to put them on anyway because, why not 3. like the S-0 truss, I used EZ line to simulate the wiring and cabling on the interior, as well as flexible black plastic rods to simulate additional hosing on the FHRC truss bulkhead 4. this is perhaps the most challenging detail piece I had to make (but not too hard) - there is a thin metal wiring rack that is mounted right beside the DDCU box on the outboard side of the truss... basing on photos, I scratchbuilt one using one of the unused prints of a truss bulkhead as reference, then slapped on some flat aluminum paint, then used EZ line for the wiring, then glued it on the required spot 5. if you noticed, there’s a printout of a truss-like pattern on the interior skin of the truss... its because the box-like wiring racks on the exterior of the truss is open on the inside... so to simulate it, I just used a copy of the wiring rack from the S-0 truss as a template, then copy/paste a bunch to form a strip of that pattern, print it to the required length and width, and glued them on the interior skin, directly where the wire rack boxes sit on the outside... then, like what I did with S-0, glued a second set of truss beams to give them a 3D look 6. for the radiator support racks, I decided to cut the lattice structure open for a better look, as well as open the dark portions on the radiator joint panels themselves... also, I added the grapple bar supports that were placed by the STS-131 spacewalkers... also, you will notice that the hoses on the radiator beams are now 3D... I used plastic rods again for this to save time 7. the CETA carts and FHRCs received some minor improvements by way of plastic rods (colored gold) for the CETA Cart handles, colored wire for the handrails, and extra bits of detail pieces (extracted from spare printouts) to give them a bit more 3D look onto them 8. and for the Truss-specific additional details
1. for the S-1 Truss, I added the following: - grapple fixtures on the Ammonia Tank Assembly (installed by the STS-131 spacewalkers after they removed and replaced the ATA with a new one) - I simulated the ripped thermal raidator panel by first drawing the inner panel in paint, then have it printed in the same dimensions as the radiator panel before gluing it in place... then, before gluing the radiator panels together, I simulated the rip based on photos, then, using my X-Acto knife, carefully cut the appropriate panel in the same pattern as the original, the. curling it up.. I intentionally allowed a bit of wrinkles while doing so, as the actual also has it 2. for the P-1 truss, I only readjusted the handrail on the workstation where the FHRC is installed, to an area just right beside bulkhead 14 so there, despite some mistakes done during the build, I must say I’m very pleased with the results, which is very encouraging especially for the next build, which will be the P-3/4 and S-3/4 trusses, which I am now building as we speak thanks much guys for looking, stay tuned Last edited by Hans Christian; 11-22-2020 at 12:19 PM. |

Good day to all!!
My sincere apologies for the lack of updates here in the forum thread, but rest assured that my work on this never stopped, in fact, I’m happy to update you all that I have finally finished the entire truss assembly (minus the solar array wings) and ESP-3. I’m currently building the four ELC racks and AMS-02 will be started as soon as possible, afterwards, its onto the solar array wings for both the truss segments and the Russian modules. I’ll be posting a series of replies here in the coming days discussing the work I was able to do with the subsequent truss segments. much thanks for looking guys and stay tuned 😉 |

Wow, this is impressive! Great work. I'm having a hard time finding reference material for the various external payloads on Zvezda - did you find dimensions or just use the photos for the ones you've built?

Rest assured that personally I will certainly stay tuned, since I am planning to build a paper model myself. Seeing how you have proceeded so far, it must be a long term project for sure, but being retired gives me an advantage: time.
Nevertheless I am highly impressed by your accuracy and your perfect eye on detail, which I will only try to emulate. Whether or not I will manage, remains to be seen. Great work! I hope to see more of your reports around here. |
