I'll have to do the complex version at 1/24 to match my collection. (Very, very sick parts of my mind have contemplated a 1/24 Atlas V -- but 8 feet is simply out of the range of sanity, so I'll probably do a 1/48 display instead.)

So, did the COTS Falcon9 and you now have a heavy in the downloads. AtlasV project is wrapped. One more?

Dang, you people are quick! Not so straightforward as it seems since the second stage is encapsulated but not really integrated into either the first stage booster or the payload fairing.

I think I have it engineered, but will need to build it (probably more than once). Of course, you'll have to wait for Erick's version if you're looking for the fine detail (and he may be done before I get this one all figured out/fixed).

It's just a tube ...

The Orbital Taurus II (COTS ISS resupply contract winner along with SpaceX) is a pretty simple shape. Tube with two engines at the bottom and top-end conics.

The design challenge is the internals (optional, right?). After first stage burnout it stages, drops the fairing, then the second stage (Castor-30 solid rocket) takes the stack to orbit. That second stage + payload is the complex bit. I modeled it by using what would normally be the joiner strip between the first stage and the fairing. The strip is glued up into a ring with the payload attachment structure inside. It rests between shelf strips glued inside the booster and fairing. The second stage then attaches (correctly) to the fixed payload adapter and the payload (drawing still in progress) can stack on top of the adapter.

Seemed simple enough (eventually). The real bugger is, as always, fit issues. Something about allowing for the thickness of the card, line widths, and nesting concentric parts. Of course, you can just ignore the internals and use the strip to connect the booster and fairing.

Well, the Taurus is actually turning into an interesting challenge to engineer the details. I'll move it over to a design thread for comment (and assistance).

The details look great already. I like that little second stage.
Unfortunately I can't comment well on the fit issues. Hope you get some good advice in the designers corner.

Don't see it at LHVCC yet, but I did try to get the free download from E-Cardmodels. Unfortunately, the site doesn't want to let me have it unless I somehow "pay" them $0.00. Uggggggggggggggggggggghhhhhh....
