Mach 6 X-15 in 1/48

On 9 November 1961, Robert White became the first person to fly a crewed aircraft above Mach 6 when he flew X-15-2, 66671, to a speed of 4,093 mph, or Mach 6.04.

At the time of the flight, 66671 looked pretty beat up. The markings on the right side of the rudder, in particular, were almost completely gone. It had the serial number on the rudder, partially obscured by a stripe of gray test paint that had been partially removed. The left side of the rudder carried the NASA band and no serial number. The wings carried no markings — not even the white “Beware of Blast” warnings near the RCS openings.

Perhaps the most striking part, though, were two patches of experimental heat-resistant paint on the left side of the aircraft. (And left side only.) The front left half of the canopy was white, and there was a small rectangle of white just ahead of the canopy sill. There was a patch on the fuselage just behind the cockpit.

I mix-and-matched bits and pieces of some of YukonJohn’s previous repaints of Henry Yuen’s model to create the Mach 6 66671. The white sections were done old-school, with white spray paint. I found the one 15-minute period when it didn’t rain in Manchester yesterday morning….

I borrowed a couple pieces (resized to 1/48th) from Ken West’s X-15A-2, and scratchbuilt various bits, including the XLR99 motor and jettison tubes. I cut apart the dorsal and ventral stabilizers to make the stub and moveable sections separate.

I love seeing all the different permutations of this model that you’ve done!

I'm kind of going to expect all 199 iterations will be on display before the year is over... (-;
Another great model, David. The weathering is excellent.

Thanks. I may be close to being X-15’ed out. I’d like to do Ken’s model — backdated to the pre-stretch airframe — in 1/32nd. But I should move on to other things. Need to find another airplane to get obsessed about….

A few suggestions for your consideration:

MBB's Lampyridae?
De Schelde's Scheldemusch?
The Pander Postjager?
Short-Mayo Composite?

The Fairey Delta had lots of different liveries.

The Boeing 707 has had lots of iterations too. You could go wild on that.

Early shortnosed versions of Phantom II, Panther or Tiger?

A series of other space planes would also be an option. (MiG 105, Dream Chaser, the U.S. Lifting Body trio, X-34, X-37 etc)

Winged Gemini? El Kabong?

In the end I am sure that whatever subject you will choose, it will be awesome to see. (-:

I’ve really enjoyed the two Turbo Beavers from DGA that I’ve built. The plane looks cool and it is a well-designed model. The liveries are endless. And then some are on amphibious floats, some are on seaplane floats, some are on normal landing gear and some have skis. Lots of options.

Except for the occasional sci-fi subject, I don’t build things with guns or bombs. There’s a whole list of subjects I’ll avoid….
