Not the best photos — and I need to come up with a new stand — but I decided to add the external tank I saw in a couple of artist renderings.

I figured maybe they would re-purpose the external tanks used on the X-15A-2, so I used some resized parts from Ken West’s X-15A-2 model. I used white cardstock and the silver portion was added with a silver permanent marker.

Still a little clean-up left to do, but at least it adds a bit of contrast to the all-black X-15….

Awesome! So... Now that we have entered the shady realms of X-15's never built, what about creating models of the designs that Republic, Bell and Douglas proposed? It would give a nice beginning to the story of all those real versions of the aircraft. You could read them as a sort of aerospace Bayeux tapestry when all put next to one another... (-:

Mike did quite an extensive piece over here on the forum about them: Design Reference X-15 Proposal
And here is some more: May 9, 1955: X-15 design proposals submitted

That would be a good project for a designer. I have enough troubles keeping up with the X-15s that were built….

The renderings or actual models are the first I've seen, I see some issue with my version of the models. Looks like a redraw for some of the changes.

Thank you for posting.

Wonder what the actual color would have been on each? All black or would the Bell have been orange? The Douglass looks like white was used.

I chose black, orange and white for the ones I did. Included the Delta as part of the group. Just basic outlines of the proposals built as stomp rockets. Been thinking about converting some of the stomp rockets to "Wrist Rocket" launchables. These would be the first to convert.

Looks interesting but pricey. Wonder what’s inside….

And, gawd, I get so tired of always seeing the X-15A-2 on the cover of these books. Speed record aside, it had more than its share or problems and aborts. Plus, it was ugly.

Mike

You're welcome, Mike. colourwise, I guess the Aircraft might have been natural metallic in colour. Paint would strip off anyway and the orange Bell used was in the early days when they thought orange was a good hi-viz colour for high flying aircraft. Maybe some white was used but I think it would be natural metal.
I think the wider rear end section of the Douglas version is really odd.
