1-72 scale Soyuz-L (11A511L) T2K LK 3rd Stage - Soviet Lunar Lander tests

Here is my build of the Soyuz-L LK Lunar Lander test 3rd Stage. I have always liked the R7 booster and wanted the unusual shroud to sit on top of my MACH2 (plastic) R7 stack.

Even after the US Lunar Landings the Soviet Union continued to test their Lunar Lander, in the hope that their N1 project would come to fruition. The lander was tested in earth orbit three times using a modified Soyuz booster:
  • Kosmos 379 - 24th November 1970
  • Kosmos 398 - 26th February 1971
  • Kosmos 434 - 12th August 1971

I have some build photos but wanted to finish it first.

Base design started with a Voskhod scale diagram and the Soyuz-L T2K model & diagrams from New Ware (nw148).

I cut the panels from the wrap in Photoshop and printed them on adhesive labels - I am fairly sloppy with glue so this makes for a much cleaner build. I tend to use 65mmx48mm labels as they give enough space in 1-72 with limited wastage.

Using DeltaCAD I drew the cones and disks and in Photoshop arranged and printed them on 220gsm 12x12 (inch) card. By the time I was on version 3 I ended up writing a script to draw the cones.

First job was the main body. I moved the join to behind one of the conduits and cut and curved the panel around a plastic pipe. Three layers of finely trimmed 220gsm card wrapped and glued gives a very sturdy tube and the correct scale diameter.

I used strip for the square conduits as I couldn't stop thick card from delaminating, some carved toothpick and the fairly tedious task of cutting out the panels from the adhesive labels and building up the layers on the body.

Next time I'll print the wrap in a pastel colour shade so at least I can see what I've already stuck on!

When complete and painted the labels give a reasonable busy-ness to the main body.

The Adapter is two layers of card wrapped around the pipe with the strengthening strips, various panels and carved details added. The CAD drawings are from Mike Dorffler's Russian Rocket CDs.

Using the backing paper from the adhesive labels as a protective layer (even superglue won't stick to it - I know I tried ) between the model and a supporting (slightly thinner) pipe the adapter and lower rocket body were taped into the right location and orientation.

I made lots of thin pipe by wrapping 80gsm printer paper around straight copper wire, 9mmx30mm strips seemed to work though they're still a little bit chunky. I made lots because the first ones were poor. The later ones seemed to be better. Picking the best ones I bent them, put them in the V template I made, cut them to length and trimmed the edges ready for gluing onto the model.

With the adapter and lower body sections held in place I first glued the vertical stubs and let them dry, these acted like stays for the V's which when added kept their position and shape. Worked surprisingly well.

After it was really dry, 2 days, I carefully slid everything off and it kept it's shape. It is quite robust and only needed a little trimming of the "glue-blobs".

Thank you SAustin. Sorry for late reply. Been away on holiday.

Now it's the cones that make up the shroud. Six cones, I like to double skin - this makes them strong and with just enough pressure they just go and stay circular. The down side is you have to trim the large diameter section.

The upside is that the centering ring just pops into place. While the glue dries I hold them in a plastic circle stencil so they keep their shape. Once dry they're really quite sturdy. Using model masking tape (Tamiya) means the join can be tight and the tape removed without ripping the card (most of the time!).

I use a 9mm knitting needle for cone and tube making and a burnisher to get the curves close

I use a multipurpose wood filler to fill the gaps before I start any priming, it dries nice and hard and sanding with 400grit means I don't rip the card. It means can get a pretty good spherical surface on the top.

With the cones glued together I added the details from carved thick card, hole punches and model race car trim (exactly 1.3 mm wide). For the most part the details cover any of the joins.

The centering rings work well in making sure to shroud sits on the main body squarely. I got this from building the fantastic 1/70 scale Saturn 1B and V models from Apogee Rockets and Tim Van Milligan. I made them as static models - the thought of spending 6 to 9 months building something and then deliberately sticking a controlled explosive (sorry rocket motor) up its backside really does not appeal to me. I am in awe of you rocket flyers.

Once primed fine sanding with 400 & 600 grit smoothes out the finish (and gets rid of the globs of glue and fingerprints I leave).

Finally the stage 3 engines were added.

Thin tubes and cones, but also some very small cones for the vernier engines. These are made from 80gsm paper wrapped around itself and stuck with superglue. Held in place in card then trimmed around a pencil or dowel sharpened with a pencil sharpener.

Glued, and painted silver with a clear red interior.

Once inserted you can't really see them but I know they're there.
